Windows 11 is right around the corner. On June 24 we will know if Microsoft finally leaves Windows 10 aside, which seems to be the case because they have announced that in October 2025 they will stop supporting it. However, the company still has many bugs to fix in its operating system.
Windows 10 has the disadvantage that it carries a history of three decades of Microsoft operating systems. There are icons that are still present on the system since Windows 95, and there are bugs that have not been fixed since some of the new system functions were introduced. So, let’s see which are the worst.
Overlapping foreground programs
When you are, for example, writing in Word, and you decide to open another program, and you return to Word, the operating system will put the program you just opened in the foreground , and sometimes it will do it several times during the duration of the opening process, as Photoshop does. Windows is going to interrupt you while you write because there are programs that do not interact correctly because they do not know what the foreground is. Other systems like macOS do.
Multi-monitor enhancements
Windows 10 has come a long way since its inception in managing multiple monitors . For Windows 11 the management of frames per second will be improved if we use screens with different refresh rates, but there are still bugs. For example, icons get disorganized and lost very frequently, and the system confuses itself when we turn a screen on or off, leaving everything black. Managing multiple displays in macOS is much smoother, faster, and doesn’t leave the screen black for a while.
Sound via HDMI
Sound over HDMI in Windows 10 is still chaos, where we are forced to connect an additional device as if it were a monitor, such as an amplifier. There is a screen mirroring solution to “cheat” that device, but there must be some native option to disable that option to have an additional screen without resorting to this trap, since the most advanced audio formats today require the use of this cable.
In addition, the optical multichannel sound has been broken since last year, and they have not bothered to fix it, since it does not allow to hit Configure.
Badly scaled apps in 4K
If you have a 4K monitor , the letter of the operating system looks excessively small, and it is necessary to resort to increasing the size of everything to 150% or even more. The problem is that many applications and programs of the operating system are not compatible with this functionality, so that when you resize it, they do not increase the resolution and it is as if we zoomed in and it is rendered at a lower resolution. In the following image we can see the sound panel on a 4K monitor, where “Sound” is correctly defined, but the other letters are blurred.
Completely kill the Control Panel
The joke has already been going on for too long. Microsoft created the Settings menu to finish removing the Control Panel . But six years have passed, and the Control Panel is still available with almost all the same functionalities. It is time to transfer everything to Settings , and also be able to use several configuration tabs at the same time, since currently we can only be in one part of that menu at a time. Hopefully the Sets functionality, which adds tabs to all system apps, adds it.
Improve consistency of system design
This is something that Windows 11 is going to do, thanks to the fact that the Fluent Design philosophy and more modern icons will be applied to the entire system, helping to improve consistency and not finding messages or icons dating from Windows 95 or Millennium. Improve start menu search
The start menu has to be in better order. Finding some shows is torture, and the search function still has a bug that is even comical. When we look for the name of a program, when we put the first letters, the one we are looking for appears, but if we add one more, it disappears. Also, in search it should be possible to easily swap Bing for Google.
Show default file extensions and folder size properties
They began to apply this change a decade ago, and to this day I still do not see the sense or advantage of not having the file extensions activated by default. This makes it very difficult to know what format we are handling, and can even lead to users opening viruses when they do not realize that the video they have received by email is actually an .msi file or similar.
Sort system files better
Perhaps for security, in addition to hiding file extensions, Microsoft also hides system files and other sensitive files by default. If they are so sensitive, what they should be is ordered in the same system folder that requires explicit permission from the user to access, and not having everything distributed in ProgramData, Program Files, Windows, the root of C, Users, etc. The system folders must be better structured , since for example finding the saved game of a game is torture.
Poor reliability of updates
Last but not least, we have one of the most important pending tasks: improving the reliability of updates . Microsoft cannot afford to have so many flaws in this regard, since there is no month that they do not break something with their monthly updates. There are even times that they have released a patch to fix a bug, and that patch in turn broke something else.
