Kodi is one of the main multimedia centers that we can set up in our home. Thanks to this completely free and open source software, we will be able to centralize all our music, movies, series and personal photos in one place. In addition, it is a multiplatform program, so, literally, we will be able to run it on any device, from our PC to a Raspberry Pi or a TV dongle. From time to time, the developers release a new version of this program, with improvements, new features and corrections. And so, today we have a new version of Kodi 20.
Kodi 20 ” Nexus ” is the new version of this media center that we will see this year. On May 17, its developers released the first preliminary version of this program, Alpha 1, for all users. This version allows us to test its new features before anyone else, assuming that, almost certainly, we are going to have problems and errors. Today, its developers have gone a step further, and have just released the second Alpha version of this program. This version is much more mature than the previous one, and brings new improvements and new features. But, still, it continues to have problems and errors.
What do we expect to see in Kodi 20
It is true that this new version does not seem to bring any completely groundbreaking version . But it is going to include a lot of changes and improvements scattered throughout the program. In the first Alpha, we were able to find the following improvements:
- FFMPEG 4.4 and improved AV1 hardware decoding on Android and Linux.
- New customization options for subtitles and new formats.
- DVD and Blu-Ray playback improvements.
- Minor system interface fixes and skin improvements.
- Steam Deck controller support.
- New Estuary PVR widget to view current programming.
- Improvements in integrated games.
- Use of 10-bit color in Windows and improvement in the use of DXVA2.
- Improvements in date and time.
- All dependencies have been updated.
Now, in addition to all the above improvements, we are also going to find the following in the new Alpha 2.0:
- Android performance improvements when opening and closing the app, as well as improvements in the use of TrueHD.
- Fixes for crashes when using H.265 on Xbox.
- Python update on Android and Apple systems.
- Multiple fixes and improvements in subtitles, especially in the use of WebVTT.
- Blu-Ray playback improvements.
- Multiple improvements in the use of themes, or skins.

Why not download this version
As we have already explained, the new Kodi 20 “Nexus” Alpha 2 is a more advanced version than the previous one, released two months ago, but it is still in a very early stage of its development. Any user who wants to try first-hand the new features that this version brings can do so without any problems. However, we do not recommend installing this version on all devices to test it on a daily basis because it will surely have errors and problems that will bother us while we use the program. In addition, it is easy for some extensions to not work as they do not yet recognize the version of the program as a current version.
Little by little, the new Kodi Nexus is taking shape, and in the coming weeks we will see new versions (still in development) that, little by little, will make this program more stable. But, as we say, it is still better to wait.
At the moment, we do not have an exact date for the release of the final version of Kodi 20, also known as “Nexus”.
