Although the next high-end mobiles of 2021 are gradually being filtered, there are still many doubts about the folding technology. We know that all manufacturers are behind this technology, with Samsung, Huawei or Motorola as the first brave to venture with their first commercial models. However, the “roll-up” mobile technology is coming down hard , and Xiaomi seems to be one of the companies that is most actively working on it.
Folding mobiles have taken their first steps with the Fold or Z Flip from Samsung, the Razr from Motorola or the Mate X from Huawei. However, rolling mobiles may come to replace them and avoid some of the headaches of this technology. A roll-up mobile uses the same raw material (flexible OLED screen) but allows a standard size mobile to stretch like an accordion to become much larger.
Rollable with two screens
Xiaomi is one of the companies that has been seeing how its rivals were right or wrong, before deciding to launch a business model. However, it might make sense that Xiaomi ignored a folding mobile, to directly launch its first roller. Now, the LetsGoDigital medium shows us the design of a Xiaomi device, whose patent has been filed both with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) and in the WIPO database (World Intellectual Property Office) .
Both in the sketches that accompany the patent, and in the conceptual designs created for the occasion by the same source, a terminal is shown that offers two screens. The terminal can use a flexible roll-up screen that can increase its size by 200%, in the style of a tablet and to increase productivity or entertainment tasks. The system works by a support mechanism inside the case, which ensures that the terminal can be rolled in and out without showing visible wrinkles on the screen.
It is also revealed that the terminal can work with one of the screens off to save battery life , or with both simultaneously. There are no details regarding the camera system, although the conceptual design has chosen to align them vertically, in the style of what was seen in its day with the Mi Mix Alpha, which never saw the light.
Will we see it in 2021?
Companies like Samsung, OPPO, TCL, LG or Xiaomi itself, have given clear clues of their interest in rolling mobiles. Everything indicates that this method solves many problems at the operational level, so it would not be surprising to start seeing this type of device during 2021.
