Will reflex cameras cease to exist?

Little by little, reflex cameras begin to kneel and are in the process of extinction. The new times have brought new technologies that allow quality photography without the need for equipment that is so expensive and, sometimes, uncomfortable in comparison.

Cameras have evolved by leaps and bounds and it is a matter of time before one type of camera prevails over others, especially if its manufacturing process is cheaper and offers good results. That is why the mirrorless is prevailing over the SLR.

Goodbye to SLR cameras

2022 is the year of the end for cameras that have dominated the world of professional photography for longer than rangefinders. Canon announced at the end of 2021 that the EOS 1Dx Mark III would be the brand’s last professional SLR, Sony hasn’t even had them in its catalog for a while and now it is Nikon who has decided to withdraw from this SLR (Single Lens Reflex) segment .

Nikon SLR cameras have been widely used by professional photographers for over 60 years. Since June 2020, when Nikon launched its flagship SLR D6, no new SLR models have been released and now it’s time to cease development of compact digital cameras .

From now on, Nikon, who were the second SLR manufacturers after Canon, intends to focus on mirrorless digital cameras , but will continue the production and distribution of existing SLR models.

Mirrorless cameras and mobile phones will take their place

Mirrorless cameras have a different display system and use image sensors that convert light into electrical signals . Like SLRs, they can accept interchangeable lenses that offer much more range than the fixed focal lengths used on most smartphone cameras.

The Nikon Z9 is a great example of what these types of cameras can do, like taking 120 images per second, more than ten times faster than most SLRs, and without the wear and tear of a shutter on movement. With improved viewfinders and less lag , faster image processing helps photographers in fast-moving situations.

In addition, software and Artificial Intelligence solutions provide facial and pupil recognition. They can also identify animals, vehicles and objects.

Already in 2020 , mirrorless camera shipments surpassed SLRs for the first time, with 2.93 million and 2.37 million units shipped respectively, according to the Japan Camera and Imaging Products Association. For the Nikon brand itself, they already account for half of the revenue from the imaging products business, compared to 30% for SLRs.
