Why Doesn’t the iPad Pro 2020 have Portrait Mode in Rear Camera?

Among all the settings and camera functions of the iPhone we can highlight the Portrait mode as one of the most popular among users. An iPad is true that it does not have the main virtue of being the best companion for taking photographs, however it is not understood how the ‘Pro’ model launched in 2020 lacks this functionality in its rear cameras. We analyze below the possible reasons for this lack, if there are any.

Context of the iPad Pro 2020 and its camera

As we said before, an iPad is not designed to take pictures. They can be done, you can get great results and sometimes you will meet the odd person who takes photos with their tablet. However, for reasons of comfort, it is not recommended. That is why it surprised many that both the 11-inch and the 12.9-inch ‘Pro’ models launched this year incorporated a dual camera with a LiDAR sensor on the back. Putting the situation in perspective a bit, it can be understood that these lenses are ultimately aimed at a very determined professional audience that needs cameras and augmented reality for their work.

With a single lens and without LiDAR sensors we find the iPhone XR and the second generation iPhone SE with the possibility of taking pictures in Portrait mode. However, in this iPad Pro it is only possible to take photographs in this mode with the front camera, something that already happened in the versions released in 2016. We insist on emphasizing that it is possibly not essential for many users, but being able to put it, why Apple don’t implement it?

The iPhone 12 Pro were the excuse

The fact that it was an iPad that debuted with a sensor such as LiDAR aroused a lot of curiosity in a few months in which it was already rumored that the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max would incorporate these sensors at its launch, although it was not official yet. It was speculated that Apple had not added Portrait mode or added specific specifications to these sensors to reserve these features for presentation in style with the new iPhone.

The presentation of the phones, although late, ended up arriving. Indeed, we learned how the LiDAR sensor was prepared to considerably improve photographs with bokeh effect and even opened the possibility that they could be done with night mode. Great, but… What about the iPad Pro? One and two months have already passed since the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max were released respectively and we still have no Portrait mode on the iPad Pro.

We do not know if this functionality could arrive in a future iPadOS update. From Apple they have not alleged any reason why they have not implemented this feature, but having already all the cards on the table it is inexplicable that they have not added it. If the company understands that there is a certain sector that if it gives importance to these cameras on its tablet, why not give them this functionality?
