Smartphone cameras with variable aperture stopped appearing a while ago, although we could already find this type of lens in Samsung‘s Galaxy S9 series. Also in others like Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 9. Finally, the new Mate 50 will recover this type of lens that can change between different aperture sizes.
Samsung was one of the few smartphone brands to offer a variable aperture sensor on its models several years ago, as opposed to the fixed aperture seen on the vast majority of phones that existed until then. Samsung and Oppo released phones with variable aperture lenses in 2018 and 2019, although these could only switch between f/1.5 and f/2.4 aperture sizes.
Now Huawei is doing it again in its new flagship range that will be presented on September 6. Although it is not known how its opening will be, it does know what it allows you to achieve.
What this variable aperture camera can do

Samsung had used a total of 8 aperture blades in its Galaxy S9 and had 2 configurations, as we have already said, with more limited advantages by using smaller camera sensors than those of today. In addition, there are now several sensors and multi-camera systems are integrated.
Being able to adjust the aperture on today’s smartphones can be a big help, especially with the large sensors they come with that often have a shallow depth of field and make you step back to get a fully in-focus image. With this variable opening it would not be necessary.
