Connecting a phone to Android Auto does not make every phone app appear on the car screen. Whether you can watch YouTube depends on the car platform, supported apps and software rollout. YouTube Music is an audio app and is a separate option.
Use video only when safely parked. A passenger in the front seat does not change the restrictions on a driver-facing display.
First, check which car system you have

An aftermarket screen advertised as “Android” may be another type of device again. Check its manual rather than assuming that all three systems have the same app support.
What changed for Android Auto video in 2026?
On May 19, 2026, Google announced parked video support for Android Auto, starting with compatible vehicles and phones running Android 17 or higher. The announcement said the capability would begin rolling out later in 2026.
That announcement is not a guarantee that the YouTube app is enabled on every Android 17 phone and car today. The particular app, vehicle and rollout still matter. Nor does it add video support to every older phone.
How to check your supported options
- Park first. Check apps and settings while the vehicle is stationary in a safe place.
- Update through normal channels. Check the phone’s system update, Google Play app updates and any car-maker infotainment update.
- Identify the platform. A built-in Play Store belongs to the car’s system; the phone’s Play Store is separate.
- Look for officially offered video apps. Use the car’s app launcher or supported in-car store. Read any phone-version or vehicle requirement.
- If YouTube is absent, check the manufacturer or app provider. Its absence does not mean you made a setup mistake.
Google’s parked video documentation for Android Automotive OS describes a different supported platform from ordinary phone projection. Do not use an Automotive guide as proof that an app will work through Android Auto.
What about Cartube and older APK guides?
An older version of this article recommended Cartube through an unofficial app store. That is not a reliable general setup method: third-party workarounds can stop working after phone or Android Auto changes, and we have not verified a current Cartube build on every supported combination.
Do not disable Play Protect, enter your Google password into an unknown app or bypass vehicle restrictions just to make an old tutorial work. If official video is unavailable, use the phone or a separate device while safely parked.
Can you listen to YouTube Music instead?
YouTube Music lists supported device and service options, including car listening. Open the supported audio app in Android Auto and check the features available with your account. Audio playback does not unlock YouTube video.
