Surely you have wondered if there is any way to turn off the Apple TV, regardless of whether or not you have the device recently. The shutdown button is not on the remote and there is no way to see it from the interface, so how does it go off? In this post we answer this question and delve deeper into how to save energy.
How to turn off an Apple TV
If you were looking for an answer to the question that we have previously asked, we answer it now: you cannot turn off an Apple TV. Or at least not in the way you’d expect on any electronic device like a television. You haven’t found a way to turn it off on the interface because it doesn’t really exist. It is not that Apple has eaten this function or that we are so clumsy not to find it, it has an explanation that we will give later.

The only real way to turn off an Apple TV, as you’ve probably already imagined, is to unplug it from the power. Either removing the end of the connector that goes to the electrical network, the one that is connected to the device or both. This will be the only way in which it is consuming zero energy, although logically it will have to be connected again to be able to use it again, which reduces comfort to the matter.
Apple TV sleep mode
Whether going to Settings or pressing the corresponding button on the remote, we will find the option to put Apple TV in sleep mode. This is the only real way offered by Apple to save energy with the device when we are not going to use it. It is not a complete shutdown, but it is the closest thing we find as an alternative to having to be disconnecting it from the current.
On an Apple TV HD or 4K you must press the upper right button of the Siri Remote for a few seconds to bring up the standby option on the screen. On an Apple TV 3 or earlier we must press the pause / play button on the Apple Remote to access it.

What this mode does is to leave the device in stand-by , in such a way that the energy consumption is minimal, but enough so that when we start the device again by touching a button on the remote we can resume everything where we left it before entering this modality.
Settings to save energy
If you have an Apple TV or HD , you can set certain settings so that the device automatically goes to sleep when a certain time elapses without you playing video content or interacting with the system.
For this you must go to Settings> General and click on the “Rest after” option, where you will find the option to set times of 15 or 3 minutes, 1, 5 or 10 hours and even the possibility that the system never goes to sleep , which is also not advisable to have activated always.
If you want to configure screensavers before the system goes to sleep, you can also do it from Settings> General, clicking on the corresponding section of the screensavers. Here you can choose the type of images that you want to be played, as well as the time that must be spent with the Apple TV without being used for them to start playing.
In any case, we want to emphasize that there shouldn’t be any problem due to the fact that an Apple TV never turns off. It is true that there will be a constant consumption, even if it is minimal, but this will not harm the device . After all, there are many devices that we have on a day-to-day basis connected to the current and do not generally suffer any damage; WiFi routers, televisions and even fridges.
