With so many people that use the internet every day for anything, strong password security is very important to protect your personal information. The more accounts we create the more complex our passwords need to be. Use a long, unique password or generated password for every account, and enable multi-factor authentication where supported. However, remembering multiple and complex passwords can be a pain. So, that’s where password managers come in.
Password managers provide a safe place to keep and use your passwords, and the best ones make it easy to on the fly share your precious passwords with other people such as family members. These programs encrypt your passwords and store them and can retrieve them using a master key. Below are four password managers with different sharing and recovery options — although they do more than simply store passwords.

1. Proton Pass
Proton Pass integrates with other Proton services. Its sharing documentation, checked on 11 October 2026, allows Free users to share two vaults with up to three people per vault, including the owner. Paid consumer plans have higher limits. A family subscription and a vault-sharing limit are different things.
Best for: Integration with other Proton services, and privacy.
Family plan: Supports up to 6 members

2. 1Password
1Password Families combines private and shared vaults. Family organizers can help members recover accounts; set up another trusted organizer and a recovery plan before anyone loses access. Consult the Families documentation for current membership limits and additional-member charges.
Best for: Having the added features of flexibility and storage.
Family plan: Up to 5 members supported with ability to expand.

3. Keeper
Keeper Family includes five private vaults and 10GB of secure file storage in the listed plan. Compare shared records, permissions and one-time sharing with your needs, rather than treating file storage as a security ranking. See the current Family plan and check any trial or renewal terms.
Best for: High storage capacity, high synchronization device
Family plan: Supports up to 5 members

4. Bitwarden
Bitwarden provides free personal vaults and device sync. Its Free organization supports sharing between two users in up to two collections; Families supports six users. An individual Premium subscription does not by itself add a family organization. Compare organization permissions before moving an item into shared storage.
Useful for: Open-source software and a free two-person sharing option.
Family plan: Supports up to 6 members

How to share without exposing your whole vault
- Give each person a separate account; keep personal logins in a private vault.
- Share only the required records or collection, using the minimum necessary permissions.
- Enable account MFA, record recovery information offline, and confirm the recovery process.
- When access ends, remove the member or link and change the underlying password if that person knew it.
- Check export formats before migrating. An unencrypted export needs protected storage and prompt deletion after import.
No manager guarantees account safety. The browser and account remain part of the workflow: compare browser privacy and security and keep your Google account active if it holds recovery mail.
