Sonic: All games and history of the SEGA mascot

It was the year 1991 when in Spanish stores some gadgets called video game consoles began to be known. Until then, Spain had been a country of 8 and 16-bit personal microcomputers (ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, Amiga 500, etc.), although the industry would never be the same again, among other things, due to the arrival of a blue porcupine, with red boots and that attended the name of Sonic. Don’t you remember the moment you met him?

Sonic: All games and history of the SEGA mascot

Mario’s natural rival

One cannot ignore the idea that Sonic was born as a direct response to Mario, the Nintendo character who since the 1980s was known for his games, first, as the anonymous protagonist of some Game & Watch and, second, as the head of the gaming revolution that began in Japan in 1985, when the NES hit the market. It was obvious that if SEGA, in the early 1990s, wanted to have a chance against its rival, it had to put a familiar face at the head of its armies.

Diseño de concepto de Sonic.

And that character was Sonic. A hero who could not even be similar to Nintendo and who had, yes or yes, to find a way to differentiate himself, to fill his personality. So SEGA did not hesitate: friendly appearance, although a bit rebellious, and with a feature that makes it unique, its speed. That would be the great difference that was going to characterize the character and, also, all his games that offered a radically different entertainment formula to the platforms devised by Miyamoto for his Mario.

Naoto Oshima and Hirokazu Yasuhara, the creators of Sonic, drew inspiration from many sources and one of them was a World War II pilot who loved to fly at high speeds, causing his hair to stand on end. From there they got some idea, but also from the boots, which were painted red and white in clear reference to Santa Claus, while that design of the shoes was clearly inspired by the cover of Michael Jackson’s Bad album, published just a few years before, in 1987.

Why so much speed?

In the summer of 1991 SEGA already had Sonic ready to launch it in Spain, with a complete marketing campaign in which it was clear that it was going to be, from that moment on, its icon. That game impacted millions of kids who had not seen a character run so fast across the screen, in a challenge that the Japanese sought to show the technical power of their Mega Drive, the 16-bit machine condemned to compete with Super nintendo.

And the bet did not turn out badly because practically from the first moment Sonic became the brand image of SEGA, completely revolutionizing the exclusive game catalog of machines such as the Master System, Game Gear, Mega CD and 32X. Unfortunately, the move to SegaSaturn, above all, was somewhat more traumatic and hardly left us with the occasional project that, on top of that, ended up being cancelled, as is the case with Sonic X-treme. Luckily, with the Dreamcast, things got back on track and we got to know the character’s jump to 3D, with two extraordinary Sonic Adventures that are already part of the imagination of any self-respecting seguero .

From that initial success of classic platform games, many other legs with different themes have appeared , which have helped make Sonic one of the undoubted protagonists of video game history, with more than 30 years behind him. and all the force intact that, if nothing changes, we will see this year resurface thanks to Sonic Frontiers .

All the games that have come out of Sonic

Below we leave you, organized by type of game, all those that have reached the market under the tutelage of the franchise. They are not all 2D platforms, nor are they 3D either, because Sonic, as SEGA’s mascot, has had to take on countless roles to entertain us on any system and console you remember. Even in those machines that did not sell too much and that went through history with more pain than glory. But they are worth remembering.

Here you have them all. Everyone, everyone.

2D classics

This section includes all the games that are inspired by the first one that arrived in 1991 for the SEGA consoles of the time. So if you want to know if you are missing any of these 2D platform classics, don’t lose sight of all the ones that have arrived over the last three decades. Are you missing any?
