Solve AirTag Battery and Pairing Issues: A Guide for Users

Apple‘s AirTags have been a lifesaver for many individuals prone to losing their keys or belongings. However, it’s essential to know that these small tracking devices have a limited battery life and may encounter issues, especially during battery replacement and iCloud linking. In this guide, we’ll address common problems and provide solutions.

How to Change the Battery in an AirTag:

AirTag Pairing

If your AirTag’s battery has run out after about a year, don’t worry; changing the internal battery is a straightforward process. Apple designed the AirTag with a twist-off back cover for easy replacement.

To change the battery, hold the AirTag between your hands and apply palm pressure while twisting one hand counterclockwise and the other hand clockwise. The back cover will easily open, allowing you to access the battery.

Unlinking AirTag from iCloud:

If you’ve changed your iPhone or iCloud account or are experiencing connectivity issues with your AirTag, consider performing a complete reset to resolve conflicts. To unlink an AirTag from your iCloud account, follow these steps:

  1. Determine which iCloud account the AirTag is linked to.
  2. Open the iOS “Find My” app to manage AirTags linked to your account.
  3. Delete the AirTag-associated object to release it from your iCloud account, making it available for a new link.

After Changing the Battery, It Doesn’t Pair:

If your AirTag isn’t responding correctly after changing the battery and doesn’t pair with your device, you can try resetting it by following these steps:

  1. Remove the back cover of the AirTag.
  2. Take out the battery and wait a few seconds.
  3. Gently place the battery back and ensure it aligns with the contact pins.
  4. Press on the battery just above the contact pins to hear a connection beep.
  5. Release the pressure for the disconnection to occur.
  6. Repeat the pressing and releasing process three more times, totaling four presses.
  7. On the fourth press, hold down the battery until you hear a different sound, indicating pairing mode activation.
  8. Your iPhone/iPad should identify the nearby AirTag and invite you to add it to your iCloud account.
  9. Assign a name and add it to your account.

Note: If the AirTag was previously linked to a different iCloud account, follow the earlier steps to remove it from Apple servers before pairing it with your account.
