How to Shut Down or Restart the PC Remotely

On many occasions, sure that after leaving home or from the office running, we have subsequently realized that we have left our PC on. Although perhaps others are those who do it consciously since they have left some process running or finishing some download or installation. In these cases, we will have to wait to return home or the office to restart or shut down the computer. However, the ideal would be to do it from any other computer remotely. Luckily, in many cases it is possible and that is why we will show how to restart the PC remotely.

Basically, we can distinguish between three different ways to restart our computer remotely:

  • From the command prompt.
  • Making use of the Remote Desktop application .
  • Using some third party application.

How to restart your PC from the command line

The first way to restart a computer remotely is to do it from the command prompt or Windows Powershell. However, this method is valid as long as the PC we want to shut down or restart is on the same network as the computer from where we are going to order its shutdown or restart.

In this case, the first thing we have to do is open the Windows Powershell tool, something we can do by typing the name of the tool itself from the search box on the taskbar. Once we have the command line in front, the next thing we should know is the command we will use to shut down or restart the PC remotely.

In this case, the command in question is “shutdown”, and the syntax to be used for this case will be:

  • [/ m // team] [/ t xxx]

Specifically, what we are going to have to indicate is the name of the command itself, followed by the / m parameter and then the name of the device in that network or its IP address. Therefore, the command to be executed from any other equipment within the same network will be:

  • shutdown / m // teamname -> shutdown / m //192.168.1.197 -> shutdown / m // team075B

Optionally, we can also add the / t parameter followed by the number of seconds we want the device to wait to restart. That is, if we add / t 60, then the indicated equipment will restart after 60 sg from executing the command.

So you can restart your PC with Remote Desktop

Remote Desktop is a Microsoft application that allows, as its name implies, connect remotely to the desktop of any other computer on our same network or through the Internet. A tool that is preinstalled in Windows 10 and therefore does not require that we perform any installation.

Of course, the first thing we have to do to be able to control our PC from another computer is to configure everything so that the remote connection can be made correctly, as long as we have not previously used and configured it.

To allow remote connections to a computer, we have to go to the file browser, right-click on This Computer and access the Properties . This will open the system properties window, where we have to click on the Remote Access Configuration option and in the Remote Access tab of the system properties, check the box Allow Remote Assistance connections to this equipment .

When our PC is correctly configured, we can start the tool on the PC from which we want to connect to shut down or restart ours remotely, indicate its IP and enter the unlock password if necessary. Once this is done, we will access the desktop of our PC remotely and we can turn it off or restart it as if we were sitting in front of it without major problem.

Shutter allows you to restart your PC remotely

Another way to restart the PC remotely is to use an application like Shutter. It is a software that we can get completely free from this link and is available in installer and portable version.

Anyway, once we launch Shutter on our desktop, we will see that it is a tool that allows us to schedule the execution of certain actions remotely. Therefore, it will allow us to schedule the restart of the computer through an event.

Once Shutter is installed on the destination PC, we can perform several remote functions from another computer through the browser. Therefore, in this case, we will use Shutter as a server that will give us remote access to our PC from any browser.

To configure it this way, we open Shutter and from the Options menu option, we enter Web Interface . Once there, check the Enable box and enter the IP of the listening device and the port through which communication will be established. There, we can also indicate the username and password to unlock the device when we connect to it remotely.

With this configuration, we will have everything ready to connect to our computer remotely from another device connected to our same network, however, it is possible that sometimes we want to connect from another computer outside our network . In this case, we can use any device to shut down or restart the PC remotely easily.

To do this, we will have to access the page of our router and make sure that the IP and port configured in Shutter are enabled. In that case, we can open any browser on any device and type in the address bar the IP address of our equipment followed by the port established for communication with Shutter. If all goes well, from there we can restart the PC remotely among other things.
