After having added the possibility of updating iOS with mobile data on those devices that have 5G, Apple seems to be about to add another interesting functionality regarding updates. As seen in the fourth beta of iOS 14.5, it could be possible that those who do not want to update their iPhone do so without the impossibility of having the latest security patches.
What does this new iOS feature mean
As we said, it has been in the latest beta of iOS 14.5 where it has been possible to find a function that until now was unpublished and that was not even present in the previous beta versions of this operating system. If you follow the path Settings> General> Software update and click on Automatic updates, you can find the following two tabs that can be activated or deactivated:
- Download new updates
- Install security updates
What do these functions mean? Well, the first one, which was already in other versions, gives the iPhone permission to update iOS when there is a new software version without having to do it manually. The second, which is the new one, allows you to automatically update with the latest security fixes. Therefore, if the first is deactivated and the second is activated, it could be possible to have the latest security measures on the iPhone without having to update the entire operating system.
What type of users does this benefit?
One of the main reasons why it is always recommended to have the latest version of iOS available is precisely to be able to have the most recent security patches, making the iPhone much safer in the face of possible malware infections. However, this new functionality opens the door to the possibility of being in an old version that even Apple has stopped signing and yet having a secure iPhone.
There are many users reluctant to update the device for “fear” that the phone will throw new bugs, bugs or even worse battery management.
