Samsung Puts a Price on its Most Ambitious Gaming Screens

At the beginning of the year, on the occasion of CES 2020, Samsung presented its new range of gaming monitors: the Odyssey family . Composed of two models, it was the G9 that really caught the attention of many for its spectacular design and its 40-inch curved panel. Now we know its price and again it is surprising, because this immersive gaming experience will not be cheap.

Samsung Puts a Price on its Most Ambitious Gaming Screens

With a name and a quite futuristic design, Samsung presented a few months ago a new screen focused on the gaming world of which we now have a price. $ 1,700 is what this particular computer monitor will cost.

Almost $ 2,000 just for a curved panel and a design with a look of Eva from Wall-E? Well, it would be unfair to keep just that. To start here, the Korean manufacturer is offering an ultra-wide screen where not only does its curvature with a 1000r radius stand out, its 49 inches are also very striking.

That screen diagonal, 32: 9 aspect ratio, and curvature are going to offer a more immersive experience than some flat equivalent. That if you have tried curved panels of large diagonal you will agree that there is certainly a better experience. Especially when the content is viewed from a short distance.

Along with all this, this panel offers a resolution of 5,120 x 1,440 pixels with up to 1,000 bits of brightness. Thanks to this, the images will be very sharp and will not be an excessive effort for the computer graphics. It is true that you will have to have a powerful GPU to get the most out of it, but for that reason it is not crazy to bet on a panel of these characteristics.

In any case, the most striking fact is that it is capable of offering a refresh rate of up to 240 Hz . There you are going to need a GPU capable of taking that number of frames per second if you want to take advantage of its full potential and it must be amazing to be able to do it with those games that you like the most.

Samsung Odyssey G9, features:

  • 49 Inch QLED Panel Curved 1000r
  • Resolution 5,120 x 1,440 pixels
  • Refresh rate 240 Hz
  • Maximum brightness 1,000 nits
  • FreeSync 2 and G-Sync support
  • Display Port 1.4 connection

The problem is that, going back to its price, spending 1,700 euros on a screen of these characteristics is not something that everyone is willing to do. Because there are already very competent screens at lower prices and with the difference you could bet on updating and improving other components of your PC and even bet on a next-generation console like the PS5 or Xbox One.

Samsung Odyssey G7

The second model of the Odyssey family is the G7 and the price has also been announced for this: about $ 700 or $ 800 depending on the diagonal. Considering that it offers a diagonal of 27 ″ and 32 ″ , VA-type panels and a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440, it is not a bad screen thanks also to the HDR support or its 600 brightness nits. But it is less attractive than the G9 and less spectacular also despite also having a refresh rate of 240 Hz.

Samsung Odyssey G7, features:

  • Panel 27 and 32 inches QLED curved 1000r
  • Resolution 2,560 x 1,440 pixels
  • Refresh rate 240 Hz
  • Maximum brightness 600 nits
  • FreeSync 2 and G-Sync support
  • Display Port 1.4 connection

In summary, that leaving aside the two smaller versions, the G9 model is an authentic past and very striking. The price will not make many units sell beyond the occasional enthusiast looking for that “dream setup” at all costs.
