How to Record Mac Screen Without Programs or Applications

Recording the screen of our computer can be tremendously useful for certain cases such as being able to explain an action. On a computer with macOS it is possible to do it without having to carry out any type of installation of third-party programs or applications, which can be extremely useful to us. Here we tell you how it can be done.

Are there any requirements?

In principle, you can record the screen of your equipment regardless of its model and features. Therefore it will not matter if it is an iMac, iMac Pro, Mac mini, Mac Pro, MacBook, MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. The processor, RAM, or storage capacity of this will also be indifferent, although for obvious reasons you should have enough space as to save the recording later.

Record Mac Screen Without Programs or Applications

Of course, you must have macOS Mojave or a later version to be able to access one of the recording methods natively. And if not, you will have to resort to Quicktime, as we will discuss in the following sections.

Record a Mac screen natively

Just as we can make captures on Mac in a really simple way through a few simple commands, it is also possible to access screen recordings in a similar way. This is the case where we said that you will need to have macOS 10.14 Mojave or a later version. The route to follow is as follows:

  • Press the CMD + SHIFT + 5 keys at the same time.

  • Various options will appear on the screen, among which are recording the entire screen and recording the selected part. Choose one of them.
  • Tap options to choose where you want the recording to be stored and if you want to add a microphone, a timer, or view the floating window.
  • Press Record and the recording will start.

Once you want to end the recording, you must click on the corresponding button that appears in the upper toolbar. The video will be saved in the path you have selected in the options and you can share it, edit it with an editing program or even delete it if it does not help you.

Record screen with QuickTime

Using QuickTime is the other native method of Apple to record the screen of a Mac as an alternative to the previous process because in more recent operating systems it leads directly to the previous options. On those Macs that have macOS High Sierra and earlier versions it is the only method to record the screen. It is true that in this case we require a program, but it is Apple’s own that comes already installed on your computers without the need to download it. To proceed to make a recording with this application you must follow these steps:

  • Open QuickTime.

  • Click on the arrow next to the record button and you can modify certain recording settings.
  • Click the record button to start recording and click anywhere on the screen to start recording the entire screen and if you want only a part select that area by clicking Start recording.

To end the recording, just press the button on the top toolbar or press CMD + Cntrl. + Esc. The moment you finish the file will appear on the screen for you to make the modifications you think appropriate and then you can save it in the folder you want.

There are other applications that can help you carry out this action with added functions, but if you are looking for something simple and fast you will not need to carry out installations thanks to the processes that we have shown you.
