Checking your Google Pixel’s temperature

Now, among the newly added features in the Google Pixel Troubleshooting service, it has become possible to check the temperature of the device directly with it through your system settings. This solves the requirement of third party applications. To access this feature:

  1. Head to your Google Pixel device’s Settings app.
  2. Then tap on ‘Battery’ to be in battery settings.
  3. To look at it’s diagnostic tools, click on “Battery Diagnostics”.
  4. To see what temperature the phone is at either choose ‘The phone is too hot’.

The Pixel 6, Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 8 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL all support this functionality. At the moment it should be limited with Pro versions of each generation though.

Monitoring Temperature Matters and Why

Occasionally, Google Pixel devices get overheated. With regular readings of your phone’s temperature, you can take the necessary steps to keep from overheating your device and extend it’s lifespan.

Tips to Prevent Overheating

To maintain optimal performance and prevent overheating, consider the following practices:

  • Avoid excessive gaming: If you do find yourself doing extended gaming sessions (especially with games that are more graphically intensive), then your CPU and GPU will be overworked and that’ll cause an increase in heat.
  • Limit screen-on time: Keeping your screen less active for a longer period of time will keep your temperature under control. It is a good idea to set a shorter screen timeout.
  • Use original chargers: This way you can use the chargers provided by the manufacturer which will reduce the risk to overheating while charging.
  • Keep your device updated: Regular software updates often optimize the system resource and temperature.
  • Avoid direct sunlight: In order to keep your phone from heating up any further, specifically on those hot days, keeping your phone out of direct sunlight should be a goal.

If you apply these practices and use the built in temperature monitoring feature, you’ll be able to keep your Google Pixel’s temperature where it needs to be.
