Xbox privacy settings control who can see parts of your profile and how you communicate or play with others. Open the account’s Privacy & online safety settings, review the detailed permissions, and save them for the correct profile. Appearing offline is a separate control.

Where to find the settings
On an Xbox console, press the Xbox button and open Profile & system > Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety. Look for Xbox privacy or Xbox Live privacy, then View details & customize. Wording can vary with software and account type.
For a child account, use the family-management route with the appropriate organiser account and select the child you intend to manage. Microsoft‘s Family Safety guide links to Xbox’s online privacy controls.
What should you review?
| Area | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Profile and real name | Who should see the personal details offered by this account? |
| Online status and activity | Who should see you online or see your game activity? |
| Communication | Who can message, invite or communicate with you? |
| Multiplayer and cross-network play | Can this account join online games and play with other networks? |
| Shared content | Who can view or interact with supported captures and creations? |
Review each available permission rather than assuming that a preset covers every situation. A profile’s visibility is not an all-or-nothing switch, and a public gamertag does not guarantee that every activity or personal detail is visible.
Appearing offline does not make the account private
Use your profile’s presence/status option if you just want to appear offline for a session. That does not necessarily change real-name sharing, messaging, old captures or permissions inside a game.
Some games have their own account, friends list and presence settings. Check those separately, especially if the same game is used across several platforms.
Child accounts and purchase approval
A child may be unable to change a setting because it is controlled by the family organiser. Do not change the birth date or use another person’s adult account to get around that. Select the child’s profile in the family settings and review the relevant permission.
Purchase approval is also separate from multiplayer access. Microsoft’s Ask a parent instructions explain the supported buying controls. Approval for a purchase does not automatically authorise chat or cross-network play.
If a change does not solve the problem
- Confirm that you edited the same Microsoft/Xbox account used in the game.
- Save the change, then restart the game or sign back in if required.
- Check the game’s own privacy and linked-account settings.
- If permission is allowed but online play still fails, investigate the connection or service status separately.
Console features such as remote game installation also have their own setup requirements. Enabling one feature does not override a child’s online-safety settings.
