The PlayStation 5 Teardown View: How to Install an M.2 SSD

It seems that Sony has made a tradition of gutting their consoles in style. It has happened again, and in this case we have before us the meticulous exploded view of PlayStation 5. Do you want to know what you will have to do to expand the SSD storage capacity?

Disassembling a PlayStation 5

The PlayStation 5 Exploded View

With the classic style that identifies them and with the Japanese minimalism that they print in each of their cuts, PlayStation has posted the official PlayStation 5 exploded view on its official YouTube channel. And yes, we finally know what we will have to do to add more memory to our console.

If until now you were thinking about how to expand the 825 GB of internal memory that PS5 offers, you are in luck. The disassembly video shows that after removing one of the side casings of the console we will have access to an M.2 socket, which will be in charge of reading new SSD storage units that we buy on our own.

It is a slightly more technical and delicate process than the one that Microsoft has chosen to integrate with its memory cards, but it also seeks the same function: increasing the internal memory of PlayStation 5.

A great fan

The exploded view, carried out by Yasuhiro Ootori, VP of the mechanical design department of the Hardware Design Division of Sony Interactive Entertainment (hopefully I can have a position this long), has also served to show all the internal parts of the console, from the motherboard to the large fan that will cool the CPU and the interior of the device.

The striking thing about the fan is that it has an outlet on both sides of the chassis , which allows it to have continuous air circulation with a very defined air inlet and outlet channel. This powerful air circulation will cause the console to collect more dust than expected, so Sony has designed two holes so that the user can easily vacuum the inside of the console and capture the accumulated dust in a simple way.

Installing an SSD

Once the side casing is removed, we can have access to a hole specially designed for the installation of M.2-type SSD memories . This type of memory is quite common to find in many stores, and its price is quite similar to that of the Xbox Series X memory card. The only detail that will have to be taken into account is the performance, since the price of these Memories oscillate a lot depending on the speed they can reach.

This slot is perfectly accessible after removing the casing, so it is designed not to invalidate the warranty in case of connecting a unit on behalf of the user.

Details not seen

The design of the console has quite interesting detail that cannot be seen with the naked eye, as is the case with the support base. This base is screwed into the lower part of the console when we place it vertically, but if we prefer to use it horizontally we will have to change the placement of the support.

Due to this, with the idea of not losing the fastening screw or spoiling the aesthetics of the console, the base includes a hole to store the screw and a plug with which to hide the hole left at the bottom of the console. Insignificant details, but that show interest in maintaining a clean design on the console.

Another interesting detail is that the Blu-ray drive has its own chassis to reduce vibrations and the sound produced by the readings of the discs, so there will also be a reduction of sound when installing the games or reading the disc .
