Official Release of iOS 14, iPadOS 14, watchOS 7 and tvOS 14

Note: this news was originally released at 7:00 p.m. Spanish time, the expected launch time of the new operating systems. Finally, the versions came out around 9:45 p.m. Spanish time.

First of all, what about macOS Big Sur?

Before proceeding to talk about the rest of the operating systems, you may be interested to know what happens with macOS 11, also known as Big Sur. We have not mentioned this version of the Mac operating system because it is not available yet. Its development process follows a different path from the rest of the software, so it will be delayed for several more weeks. It is expected that in October it may be available.

Highlights of iOS 14

• Widgets on all screens . Possibly you have already heard about it and that is that iOS 14 brings with it a new way of designing the screens of our iPhone, with redesigned widgets that can be put anywhere.
• App Library or Apps Library. A new section is added to the right in order to automatically and intelligently group the applications stored on our iPhone. Something outstanding in this regard is that applications can be removed from normal screens without having to uninstall them, having access to them from this new screen.
• Picture-in-Picture for videos. Now you can enjoy movies, series and videos on your iPhone while doing other things through the system in a small window. Of course, on platforms such as YouTube it is not enabled, although it is expected to be added to premium subscribers.
• Siri and calls no longer get in the way. Until iOS 13 it was tedious to invoke the assistant or receive a call, since it took up the entire screen. In iOS 14 Siri occupies only a small part of the screen and calls jump into a banner at the top when the iPhone is unlocked.
• Native translator. Although it still does not reach the level of other popular translators, Apple Translate works very well on the device and integrates seamlessly with Siri.
• Compatible iPhone: iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE (1st and 2nd generation), iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max.

The best of iPadOS 14

• New interface in native apps . For example, Photos and Files now have a left sidebar that makes browsing between folders more comfortable, making everything more accessible.
• Improvements in writing with Apple Pencil. Now you can draw geometric shapes with the stylus and have them automatically correct, leaving a better result. It is also possible to type text manually and have it converted to normal text, this being available in other parts of the system where there are text boxes in which, in theory, it should be typed.
• Mouse and keyboard gaming compatibility. The fact that iPads integrate so well with mice and keyboards not only serves to navigate or write, but in some games such as Apple Arcade they can serve as controls during games.
• New Siri interface and calls. As in iOS 14, the Apple assistant and calls no longer interrupt the actions we are carrying out with the iPad, since they now occupy a minimal part of the interface.
• Search improvements. With an interface very similar to that of the Mac, the iPadOS search box improves by including all kinds of universal searches.
• Compatible iPads : iPad (5th, 6th, 7th and 8th generation), iPad mini (4th and 5th generation), iPad Air (2nd, 3rd and 4th generation) and iPad Pro (all models).

Most relevant features of watchOS 7

• New spheres. Something common in each version and to which this year some highlighted ones are added with flag colors or the possibility of putting Animojis.
• Notices for hand washing. If there is something fundamental during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is to maintain good hand hygiene and in this version we find (with the exception of Series 3) a 15-second counter that is activated when it is detected that we wash our hands. Likewise, notices are added as a reminder when we enter the house and we have not washed our hands.
• Sleep analysis. Although some data that is in third-party apps is missing, the Apple Watch already has a native app capable of monitoring our sleep at night and offering results when we wake up.
• Share spheres easily. It is now possible to share our spheres with their respective complications quickly and easily with our friends. It will also be possible to install third-party ones in an equally simple way.
• New dance training. Regulars to dance any type of discipline will find a pleasant surprise to see how the Apple Watch can already record this activity as a workout.
• Compatible Apple Watch : Apple Watch Series 3, Apple Watch Series 4, Apple Watch Series 5, Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE.

Few, but interesting news in tvOS 14

• Connect two pairs of headphones . It is only available on Apple TV 4K, as they have Bluetooth 5.0 technology, which is what allows you to connect two pairs of headphones with this technology, such as AirPods.
• Videos in 4K. At last it will be possible on Apple TV 4K to enjoy YouTube in this resolution, something that was absurdly not possible on tvOS 13. The same happens with the videos of the iPhone or iPad that we reproduce here using AirPlay.
• Picture-in-Picture. As in iOS, the ability to view video content in a small window while browsing the Apple TV interface has been added.
• New Control Center . This section that can be opened by pressing and holding the upper right button of the remote control has been redesigned, allowing you to find some more accessible functions.
• Improvements with HomeKit devices. The home automation accessories that we have can finally be managed with an Apple TV from tvOS 14.
• Compatible Apple TVs: Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K.

And these are the main novelties of each operating system that can already be installed . Remember to have some patience if you are downloading it shortly after launching, since the servers will be crashed.
