Those of you who have been with a laptop for a long time will surely understand what annoying noise is when the RPM of the fans spikes in the computer. Whether it is an office or gaming laptop, the sensation of those revolutions in such a small fan makes it look like a turbine, but of course, if the equipment does not cool, the performance plummets. So NVIDIA designed a technology to solve this without compromising the best of both worlds: NVIDIA WhisperMode .
In office automation, everything is more under control, but in a gaming laptop the GPU gives off such an amount of heat that after a while the cooling systems are not able to remain silent while maintaining performance. In other words, as time goes by, the GPU gets warmer and the RPM increases, which triggers the noise, but if we want to keep that last parameter at bay, the performance will drop because the frequency does the same to keep the GPU safe.
NVIDIA WhisperMode: a technology that changed the gaming industry
NVIDIA WhisperMode is an ultra-efficient mode designed to minimize laptop fan noise while providing a good gaming experience for the gamer. How does NVIDIA achieve this a priori so complicated? Well, it is a mixture of three clearly differentiated factors:
- Regulation of FPS.
- Smart selection of game settings.
- Less heat generated in the GPU.
First of all, NVIDIA is in charge of defining the WhisperMode profile within its GeForce Experience. Previously, the company has measured the consumption of each of its GPUs at various levels and scenarios, with different graphic loads and with different settings, so they have a complete mapping of how each model behaves in said game and, above all, how many watts draw on them, so you can determine the most appropriate setting for each type of consumption.
The sweet spot for visual setup and power consumption
What is done by NVIDIA is hard work with more than 400 games today. As we know, the higher the graphic load, the more the GPU suffers to move the game and therefore less FPS delivers and more heat generates.
Keep in mind that NVIDIA establishes a different framerate and consumption for each game. Thus, in an FPS the rate will be higher and the adjustment will be lighter, while in an MMORPG
But there is a point where the scale breaks down and the visual improvement is minimal compared to the increased consumption. What WhisperMode achieves is to optimize that curve to the so-called “efficient Setting”, which is considered the most optimal setting, therefore, this mode reduces sound pressure levels by up to 50% (depending on the specific laptop).
It is true that we will not have the same performance as with WhisperMode disabled, since it is about seeking the highest efficiency and compromise between power / consumption / loudness, so we must always keep this in mind.
Lastly, NVIDIA enabled this mode for notebooks that include an NVIDIA GTX 1060 or higher and from GeForce Experience 3.8 onwards.
