The US Air Force is considering the initiative to create an air vehicle that can assist in the medical evacuation of wounded soldiers near a base where combat is taking place. This novel carriage, which could have or without a pilot, would land vertically, pick up injured people and take flight again to a place where they could be treated. Last year the assistant secretary of the Air Force said the company’s plans were to have at least 30 airborne vehicles by the end of the decade.
Flying cars can be used to transport VIPs or for National Guard missions such as firefighting, personnel recovery, search and rescue, and aeromedical evacuation. This has been confirmed by one of the Air Force deputies, Lt. Gen. S. Clinton Hinote , who assures that this project is right now in its first steps. With this initiative, in addition to saving lives, different equipment could be distributed. “I could see a future in which taking off and landing in the air at high speed is very useful,” he added.
The possible future of military aerial vehicles
Throughout 2021, the Air Force will develop different experimental campaigns that will help the service turn these ideas into reality. The company will try to sell its plans for the future of air power to Congress through a budget request. Hinote has also stated that this technology is necessary to fight against China at the military level, since lately there has been a lot of concern with the growth of the Asian country.
“It will not be necessary for all bases to have aircrafts or equipment. National Guard bases that have AC-130 aircraft for transport missions will be able to transition to flying vehicles or other types of unmanned aircraft in the future. We will continue to have conversations and we will continue to learn and grow. ” Hinote finished.
