In our day to day there are many moments in which we must register on a web page. We register in online stores to buy all kinds of products, from the pharmacy to a new shirt, but we also register on websites to edit photos online or to play a game on the Internet or even to learn about a new tool or social network that have been recommended to us. And there is a common practice that you will surely do, because it is comfortable and fast, and that you should never do when registering on a web page.
Many of the websites that we use every day allow us to access by creating an account with an email and a password and allow us to access with that data every time we want to use the page, buy something, enter to carry out any management. But many of these websites also allow us to access directly with our Google or Facebook account without having to create a new account.
This is a bad idea. You may have given it some time because it is much faster to access with your Facebook or Google profile if you do not feel like looking for a password, receiving a confirmation email, etc. But what we do when accessing our data is to give access to that page or platform to our profile. In most cases, nothing will happen if it is a reliable website. But what if it isn’t? It can be risky to grant permission to view or even edit our information so your best bet is to create a new, separate account.
Use temporary emails
Also, an “extra” tip when registering on some websites is to use a temporary email address or a disposable address. This is not recommended in an online store where you are going to enter your address or your personal data, but it is if you want to read something or if you want to try a page that does not seem entirely reliable. You will avoid spam in your inbox if you are not going to use it anymore and you will get more privacy and security without giving your real email.
There are many options to create this type of address and we can use Yopmail , for example, which allows us to access an inbox to confirm an email and create an account. Or use any of the many alternatives that exist if the registration page or application does not seem very recommendable to you.
How to remove permissions
Once you have done this, we have no “solution” except to remove the permissions that this website or application or tool has or eliminate the access it has to our different social networks or to the services that we have given permission to enter. It will depend on what you have registered with, with Google or with Facebook, there are some steps that we can follow to revoke the permissions and be more secure.
In the case of Google, we can access our account details by logging in with our email and password. From the myaccount.google.com settings we can follow a series of steps to see who has access and how to remove them . We go to the “Security” section in the menu on the left in the morning and here we look for the section “Third-party applications with access to the account” and tap on “Manage third-party access”. On this screen we will see the applications that have access to the account or to a specific part, such as the use of WhatsApp with Google Drive.
And we will also see, at the bottom, when we have used our Google account to log in to websites and applications. We choose the one we want and tap on “remove access” as you see in the screenshot.
On Facebook we can also do it and with similar steps. We open the web, go to our account, access settings and go to the “applications and websites” section. Here we can see the applications that have access to our Facebook profile, as you see in the screenshot below. We delete by tapping on the button next to each of the options.
