Moto Edge Plus Review: Balance Between Power and Design

Moto Edge Plus Review

Motorola‘s return to the high-end looks promising, especially since it put the latest generation components and a sleek, functional design on the Moto Edge Plus.”

  • Elegant and functional design
  • Competitive price
  • The ultimate in performance
  • Quick response fingerprint sensor
  • Fast charge not so fast
  • Package does not include headphones

Before I started using the Moto Edge Plus, I had some doubts. Would Motorola be able to successfully return to the high-end segment? Why did you decide to return with a cell phone with a curved screen? Will he manage to earn a place in the competitive section of premium smartphones ?

The first thing that catches the phone’s attention is its display . Immediately, it leaves the feeling that the firm worked with the intention of leaving a good taste in the mouth from the moment of turning on the equipment. The animated background that comes by default – the sea hitting the shore of a beach – could not have been better chosen to “refresh” the view of the users.

Yes, I must confess that the Moto Edge Plus seemed extremely “square” to me, since the brand decided to “bend” the edges of the screen to almost 90 degrees, however, unlike other curved phones, I did not feel that this was gone to “drain” easily from the hands.

The screen and the back of the phone are divided by a thin aluminum frame. And speaking of its “back”, which is covered in glass, Motorola decided to put the vertically aligned main optics here; in fact, the three sensors that comprise it protrude from the base.

Underneath the centered lenses is the Motorola logo, well integrated into the rest of the smartphone’s elegant design.

It is noteworthy that the manufacturer decided to keep the physical 3.5 mm jack headphone port, although neither these nor other headphones are included in the purchase package. What does come, and is appreciated, is a transparent case to protect the equipment.

The mobile also considers a USB Type C input to charge it, stereo sounds and the classic power buttons and to raise and lower the volume on the right side.

Unlike the Moto Edge, the Edge Plus does not incorporate a microSD card slot: the user will have to settle for the 256 GB base storage (free, actually, there are 236 GB left), which shouldn’t be a problem for those taking photos and record high quality video frequently.

Immersion to the full extent of the word

The main attraction of the Moto Edge Plus is its waterfall type screen, in which a fingerprint sensor that responds well was introduced. It is a 6.7-inch OLED display with Full HD + resolution (1,080 x 2340 pixels). Its refresh rate is 90 Hz, which means it updates visually 90 times per second.

Yes, cell phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S20 and OnePlus 8 Pro come with a refresh rate of 120 Hz, however, the new Motorola member is not a must when navigating through the different applications and menus: the actions are fluid, at just like when running mobile games.

When it comes to playing series and movies on the different streaming platforms, it also shows off. The first thing that is worth noting is that the quality of the brightness is now expected. With previous phones of the brand, particularly in the mid-range, my impression was that they were due in this regard, even when it was at its highest level. It does not happen with the Moto Edge Plus, and perhaps it is because it incorporates OLED technology.

The colors displayed are accurate, especially when playing content dominated by light tones. As for the contrast, in “darker” productions, it is precise, so the display is not difficult even when the brightness is at 50 percent of its capacity.

What also contributes to a good multimedia experience is that the smartphone incorporates stereo sound, backed by Waves technology. The audio is clear and powerful, regardless of whether it is at a medium or high level.

Finally, the borders can be configured to be interactive: they allow you to access an applications tab to quickly review notifications with simple gestures. When playing content, there are no interruptions for taking the phone from this part of the screen; What can happen in some places, only in some, is that the text extends to these areas, which implies tilting the display to read the content (it is not a serious situation, but it happens).

Ready for action

Motorola was not limited in configuring the performance of the Moto Edge Plus. Inside, you can find the Snapdragon 865 processor and 12 GB of RAM (DDR5). These specifications also make the mobile ready for the 5G network (at the moment, this technology is not global).

As you can expect from such a team, application execution is fast, just like mobile games. Online browsing feels smooth…. Of course, it is also important to have a good internet connection to get the most out of every situation.

In a performance test on AnTuTu —although these are increasingly less relevant—, the Moto Edge Plus comes out with outstanding ratings, in fact, it was placed among the three best-rated phones, not so in the last batch reported by the firm, which corresponds to May 2020.

By having the latest in components, you are sure to meet the highest expectations of those looking for the best mobile performance, whether for entertainment or productivity.

Autonomy for a while

Motorola provided the Moto Edge Plus with a 5,000 mAh battery, which could be enough to avoid relying on a plug for a day and a half, according to tests.

Here it is important to note that if you deactivate the interactive borders of the screen or opt for a static background instead of the animation that comes by default, for example, the performance could be lengthened a little more. In the promotion of the smartphone , the manufacturer promises at least two days of autonomy.

The mobile is compatible with fast home charging, TurboPower (15 watts), which takes about 150 minutes to have the battery at its maximum capacity. For my taste, Motorola was able to increase the range of this feature to reduce time, especially when other manufacturers have opted for a quick charge of 25 or 40 watts, in order to have their units at 100 percent in less than 60 minutes. .

As for reversible charging, it means that the Moto Edge Plus can recharge other compatible cell phones or gadgets without cables, as if it were a wireless base. It is still a feature that can save you from trouble, so its incorporation is also appreciated.

Triple optics

Like all cell phones, the Moto Edge Plus requires the user to identify himself with the camera interface to take advantage of each of his lenses. What is true is that those who have already used a Motorola smartphone will find known elements, which makes “learning” faster. It stands out that, depending on the environment, the optics “make” recommendations to change from one mode to another in order to achieve the best image.

Generally speaking, the cell phone comes with a 108 megapixel main lens, 16 megapixel ultra wide angle and 8 megapixel telephoto. While the camera for selfies is 25 megapixels; Motorola decided to place it in the notch located at the top left of the screen.

Especially with good natural light or outdoors, the results obtained with the Moto Edge Plus cameras will leave users happy. There are precise colors and well-defined details, both in portraits and panoramic images.

For those who love nature, the macro mode will keep them happy, since it allows them to appreciate elements that at first glance go unnoticed. For example, in the following photo, I hadn’t noticed that the leaf has a “stamped” bug until it passed through the lens of the phone.

In the video configuration, in addition to 4K, it is possible to choose a 6K recording, for those who already have equipment to edit and view materials in these resolutions.

Conclusions

Motorola’s return to the high-end from the Moto Z3 looks promising, especially as it put state-of-the-art components, including 5G connectivity, in a sleek and functional design.

Despite the care taken by the Moto Edge Plus, the firm decided to list the product under $ 900. This gives you a balance between quality and price.

It is early to say that Motorola will be successful in the premium segment with its new smartphone , but it does assure that it will attract the attention of more than one customer at the points of sale because, as said at the beginning, it falls in love at first sight.
