Although it has been active since previous versions of MIUI, it was not until MIUI 12 when the virtues of Xiaomi‘s video toolbox have been fully exploited, a function that many are unaware of but that serves, above all, to enhance multimedia consumption with our phone.
MIUI 12 integrated a large number of renovations into this function, such as a completely renewed user interface experience and smart functionalities that Xiaomi users have been waiting for for a long time. This box stays on the left or right side of the screen and allows us to quickly access many video-centric controls with a simple swipe. You can take a screenshot, record a video, create a note in a floating window, and best of all, play video sound with the screen off.
Unfortunately, a new problem with MIUI 12 has given this last possibility, a way to enjoy your music without wasting the battery that many users of the brand used.
No background audio on YouTube
What makes this feature really cool is the option to play video audio with the screen off, identified in the tool by an ear icon. This small utility does exactly what its name suggests and allows, among other things, to listen to YouTube with the screen off , avoiding the YouTube background playback restriction imposed on free users. Obviously, the use of the function is not limited only to YouTube, since it can also be used in other applications, to play voice messages on Instagram with the screen off, or to play podcasts for example.
Unfortunately in the last few hours there are several complaints on the Xiaomi forums that state that the background audio playback function in the MIUI 12 video toolbox does not work with YouTube.

MIUI 12 error or YouTube fault?
Apparently even if the function is used, as soon as the screen is turned off the YouTube audio cuts out . Some users have weighed that, since it only happens with the Google app, YouTube has put measures to prevent Xiaomi users from skipping the limitation, one of the star measures of the Premium service of the app.
Luckily, a support center moderator indicates that the problem is not universal and occurs from time to time only on certain devices, such as the aforementioned Redmi Note 8 . The source of this bug is probably a bad update, but unfortunately a fix has not yet been provided to affected users.
