Microsoft Fixes Error with Windows Recovery Partition

The most recent version of Windows 10, the May 2020 Update or version 2004, is full of corrections and news, as we discussed these weeks. But not all are as visible as others, as is the case with which we are going to talk now.

And it is that from what you are seeing now, it seems that Microsoft has finally solved a problem with the system recovery partition that we found in previous versions. As some of you may have checked, when upgrading Windows to the next version, sometimes the system creates a new recovery partition. This happens when it detects that there is not enough space on the original recovery partition.

But of course, Windows itself cannot expand a partition when the unallocated space is not right after the system partition. Therefore the problem comes when the computers put the WinRe or Windows Recovery partition in the first place. This prevents users or the operating system itself from expanding it. Say that we can run into this situation when Windows Setup places the recovery partition first by default.

Also, in some configurations this recovery partition is between the MSR and Windows partitions. Well, you have to know that this is not a problem until a new Windows 10 feature update requires more space for that recovery partition . The same is true when you want to expand the space of the system drive. Thus, when the recovery partition cannot be expanded because it was at the beginning, a new one is created, which reduces the system drive and the original recovery one becomes obsolete.

Logic says that we can either remove the obsolete recovery partition or enlarge it to avoid creating a new one. Unfortunately this is currently impossible with the Microsoft Disk Management Tool. To make any changes to the positions of the partitions, you must use the diskpart.exe command line tool or a third-party application. That is why, as we mentioned at the beginning, the 2004 version of Windows 10 now corrects the fault in the position of the partitions.

Starting with the new version of Windows 10, the installation program uses the recommended partition layout in a clean installation. Previously, Windows Setup placed the recovery partition first by default, which is against Microsoft’s own guidelines. Those of Redmond recommend placing this recovery partition immediately after that of Windows . This allows the system to modify and resize it later if necessary when updating.

Windows 10 recovery partition is positioned correctly

Please note that we may already have the correct partition layout from the beginning before installing Windows 10 2004 . However, when using the Windows installation program, the recovery partition could still be positioned incorrectly first.

So right now the Windows 10 version 2004 setup program creates the recovery partition after Windows own. This avoids the possible problems that we have discussed. In this way the configuration of Windows 10 now uses the appropriate partition distribution.

Saying that the old method has been a big problem for some users creating multiple recovery partitions, thus wasting space on the main one. It was also the case that this prevented users from expanding the space of the system drive, which will not happen again.
