How to Zoom Out in Gmail, Enlarge Text or Fit the Screen

To zoom out in Gmail on a computer, use your browser’s zoom controls. On Windows, Ctrl + Minus makes the page smaller and Ctrl + 0 resets it. If Gmail is too small, zoom in instead. Inbox density and the font in messages you write are separate settings.

How to zoom out in Gmail or enlarge the display

Open Gmail in your browser, then use the matching shortcut:

What you want Windows/Linux Mac
Make Gmail smaller Ctrl + Minus Command + Minus
Make Gmail larger Ctrl + Plus Command + Plus
Reset to normal size Ctrl + 0 Command + 0

You can also open the browser menu and use Zoom. Google documents Chrome’s zoom controls. Change the size one step at a time until the inbox and message fit.

Why did Gmail suddenly get very small or very big?

An accidental browser zoom shortcut can cause it. Reset to 100% first, then check another website. If every app on the computer is affected, check the computer’s display or accessibility settings instead of changing Gmail’s outgoing font.

Change Gmail inbox density

  1. Open Gmail on a computer and click the Settings gear.
  2. In Quick settings, find Density.
  3. Try Default, Comfortable or Compact.

Density changes the space used by inbox rows; it is not a zoom control for received messages. Google’s Gmail reading guide explains these options.

Change your outgoing text separately

For a message you are writing, use the compose toolbar’s formatting controls. For your usual style, open Settings → See all settings → General → Default text style, then save your changes. Google’s message-formatting guide describes fonts and formatting; it does not promise to resize received HTML layouts.

If only one message looks wrong

A large embedded image or fixed-width table may be responsible. Compare another message before resetting browser settings. If the information matters, ask the sender for a simpler text or document version.

If Gmail as a whole looks broken

  1. Check the zoom level and reload the page.
  2. Compare in another supported browser or a private window, knowing you may need to sign in again.
  3. If the comparison works, investigate relevant extensions or site data one change at a time.
  4. Do not assume private mode removes every cached condition or guarantees that no extension runs.

Save drafts and confirm account access before clearing site data. For accidental fullscreen or magnification, see common keyboard-mode fixes.
