Launch of macOS Big Sur and Mac with ARM, Will They Coincide?

This week we witness the presentation of new products and the official arrival of all operating systems with the exception of macOS. Taking into account that there would soon be new Apple computers with ARM chips designed by them, we analyze what range this would be and if it will coincide in dates or not with the official launch of macOS 11.

The MacBook range is the best positioned

We spent several years pending rumors that Apple would leave behind the Intel processors in Macs to start incorporating its own processors with ARM architecture as it happens in the rest of its iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and even Apple TV products. This was finally confirmed in the last WWDC 2020, where the company announced that the Macs with ARM would arrive this year.

It was not expected that these new Macs would be announced at the special event on September 15 and finally the surprise did not jump. There are numerous analysts who already point to the first devices that will carry these chips. Among these stands out Ming-Chi Kuo, an Asian analyst with sources in the supply chain. Although the MacBook Air and Pro are candidates as well, the analyst has pointed more specifically to the 12-inch MacBook range, a discontinued model that could be a perfect candidate to be the first to have chips designed by the Californian company.

Precisely of this MacBook it has been said that it would carry an A14X chip , being an improved version of the A14 Bionic of the iPad Air 2020 and of the future iPhone 12, which would show excellent results in performance thanks to its 12 cores . It was also commented that its weight would be less than 1 kg , it would have a USB-C connector and its autonomy would be between 15 and 20 hours .

That it is also the MacBook range agrees, as the company recently renewed desktop devices such as the 27-inch iMac. In addition, the same sources that suggest that laptops will be the first with ARM are the same ones that affirm that we will not see iMac of this style until 2021, year in which the design of these would also be completely renewed.

Is this related to the lag in macOS 11?

This new software for Mac, dubbed ‘Big Sur’ by Apple itself, was also presented at WWDC and its launch date was (and is) scheduled for autumn. It has attracted powerfully attention that it has not been launched with the rest of the systems, but it is not something new either. Just last year we already observed how macOS Catalina was a month behind the rest of the software.

Considering that macOS 11 is still in its seventh beta for developers and that it is a system almost completely redesigned on an aesthetic level and with many new functions, it is understandable that they are taking a little more time. In fact, it is believed that Apple is thoroughly testing every detail of this software with ARM processors to ensure that everything works correctly, so it would not be surprising if the launch of this at least coincided with the announcement of its new Macs.

October could be the key month. If the company finally decides to hold another event, even online, it would have to announce its long-awaited iPhone 12 and for sure that Mac with ARM could be a perfect keynote companion for these. At the moment all the dates that exist are mere speculations, having even found a possible Easter egg in the event last Tuesday in which an event was scheduled for September 30. However, we insist on emphasizing that it is merely speculative and that the firm led by Tim Cook has not yet ruled on the matter.
