Is it slower to browse through DNS over HTTPS?

There is no doubt that having a good internet speed is a very important factor today. Every time we connect more computers to the network and make use of more and more services. Social networks, email, browsing, watching streaming videos … Everything consumes resources. Now, in order for it to work quickly, different factors come into play and not just the rate that we have contracted. If we browse through DNS over HTTPS, will the connection be slower? We talk about it in this article.

Does DNS over HTTPS connection slow down?

Maintaining safety when browsing is equally essential. However, on many occasions we can see that the speed or certain functions are reduced. Ultimately, the information is encrypted and that takes a process that sometimes slows down everything.

If we think of DNS over HTTPS, or also known simply as DoH , we can say yes. You are going to increase the loading times of a web page. This is so since there is more data and more web traffic that you have to encrypt and decrypt. This is what causes an encrypted communication to be somewhat slower, as is normal.

Now, is it really going to influence us enough to consider not using this type of encryption? The answer is clear: it pays to browse through DNS over HTTPS and to be able to have the improvements in security and privacy that it offers. We can say that the difference is very small and, on paper, it would not be noticeable by users.

Keep in mind that today the main browsers such as Google Chrome, Opera or Edge have DNS over HTTPS encryption. This gives us that extra security when we surf the net. Also, an alternative that we can find is DNS over TLS or DoT.

Change DNS servers, an option for speed

DNS servers are necessary to surf the Internet. They act as translators and basically their function is to allow access to a website without having to know its IP address. For example we can put this article.net in the browser and enter directly.

But can we use other DNS servers? Normally we use those offered by the Internet operator itself, but we can change them for others. An example is Google or Cloudflare DNS, which are known to be fast and secure. They are an interesting alternative and they can come in handy if we see that the connection is slow.

To change them we have to go to Start, enter Settings, go to Network and Internet, click on Change adapter options and select the one that corresponds, either Wi-Fi or Ethernet. You have to click with the right mouse button, enter Properties, Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP / IPv4) and again Properties. There we will see the option to manually select the DNS servers .

You just have to fill in the corresponding data and click OK. In this way, our teams will use those servers instead of automatically those provided by the Internet operator.
