If I buy a new computer, can I upgrade to Windows 11 for free?

upgrade to Windows 11 for free

Last week, Microsoft finally launched the long-awaited update to its operating system, Windows 11. This new system is loaded with news (especially visuals) and seeks to give a touch of fresh air to its Windows 10 that, after 6 years in the market begins to become somewhat obsolete. Like all the company’s operating systems, this new Windows is also a payment system, which we must activate with its corresponding license once installed. And so what if I just bought a new computer, or plan to buy it soon? Will I have to pay to upgrade to Windows 11 ?

Windows 11 is free if you already paid for Windows 10

Since the launch of Windows 8, Microsoft is offering all users who have an older version of their operating system to upgrade for free, without paying, to the latest Windows. Thus, those who used Windows 7 could upgrade to Windows 8 for free, and those from Windows 8 to Windows 10. Of course, this promotion is valid only for a limited time, that is, during the first year. After that time, in theory, it is no longer possible to take advantage of these free updates (although, to this day, there are still tricks to go from Windows 8 to Windows 10 for free ).

With the release of Windows 11 , things remain the same. During the first year (in theory) it is possible to update any computer with an original Windows 10 key to the new Windows 11 for free without problems. The only thing we have to make sure is that our computer meets the requirements to be able to carry out the update. That is to say:

  • 8th Generation Intel (or AMD Ryzen 2000) Dual Core 1GHz 64-bit Processor.
  • 4 GB of RAM.
  • 64GB of hard drive or SSD space.
  • UEFI system firmware.
  • Secure Boot activated.
  • TPM 2.0 module installed on the PC.
  • DirectX 12 compatible graphics.

Install Windows 11 - Step 49

Of these requirements, there are three that are key aspects. The first of these is the CPU, which must be less than 4-5 years old. The second is RAM, since if our PC does not reach 4 GB we can forget about this system. And, the third, and most important, the TPM 2.0 chip. Any computer 4 years old or less should be compatible with Windows 11. If it is older, it is very likely that we will have problems and we will have to cheat in order to update.

If we meet these requirements, we can upgrade without problems, and without paying, to the new Windows 11 . We can already see a notice in Windows Update that will inform us that our computer meets the requirements of the new OS, and we can only wait for Microsoft to bring the new version to our computer. Once installed, we will have the new Windows activated and 100% legal.

What should I look at to buy a new computer?

If you are thinking of buying a new computer, then you don’t have to worry. Any new PC should be compatible with the new Windows 11 , and well meet the requirements specified by Microsoft. To make sure of this, what you should look at is that the processor is an Intel Core of the series 10000, 11000 and even the new 12000. Any new PC will have at least 4 GB of RAM, more than 64 GB of disk space hard drive and UEFI, Secure Boot, TPM 2.0 and other essential requirements.

Windows 11 will reach all computers, regardless of brand. It does not matter if they are HP, ASUS, LENOVO, ACER or whatever brand they are. And all can be updated for free as we have explained.

We can also wait a little longer for the first computers with Windows 11 to hit the market, and thus avoid having to wait for the update to reach our PC and install it manually.
