Microsoft’s Copilot AI is bringing a new modern twist to one of the staples of Windows — Notepad. Rewrite is a new feature in this new feature that brings generative AI capabilities to the simplicity of Notepad, by providing intelligent text improvements in the area of grammar, style, and tone.
For now, this is in testing and available only in certain areas but will give Notepad a level of power for drafting, editing, and tightening content.
Notepad’s rewrite feature, what can AI do?
The AI-powered Rewrite feature enhances text that you’ve already written by adjusting its:
- Grammar and Spelling: The AI improves your text with regards to readability and accuracy.
- Tone and Style: Rewrite can alter tone of your content to be more formal, informal, funny, inspirational, and could fit for certain kind of style like business or academic style.
- Format and Structure: With your needs in mind, the AI can change your text to fit compatible formats – for example, lists, marketing texts or even poetry.
We do not intend to develop functionality that will produce text out of thin air, but only to refine and assemble text that already exists.
How to Use the Rewrite Feature in Notepad on Windows 11
Using Rewrite is simple:
- Type Your Text: Start by writing your content as usual in Notepad.
- Select the Rewrite Button: After you type in your content, click on the “Rewrite” button to show you AI editing text options.
- Choose a Style or Tone: You just select from Lengthen, Formal, List, Business, Marketing, Humor and many more, to customize the output according to your requirements.
Privacy and Accessibility
Rewrite users have to sign in with a Microsoft account, and text input is routed through Azure for AI functionality. No content is stored post processing according to Microsoft, and so the user’s privacy and data are kept secured. This is based on an AI Credits system for which Microsoft adjusts feature performance upon usage.
