Surely if we ask you what is the model of your laptop or its serial number, you will hardly know how to answer us. Nothing happens either, because it is data that most people (including us) know. But, knowing the laptop model is quite important and you can get this information very quickly and easily.
Even if two laptops look physically the same, they may have a different identifier. The model in a laptop depends on the components, type of screen, resolution and connectivity. All these aspects can affect the final denomination of the laptop by the manufacturers.
Why is it necessary to know the laptop model
There are many reasons why you may not know exactly which laptop model and serial number you have. It may be that the laptop was given to you, it is possible that you have had it for a long time or simply, you have acquired it reconditioned for its good price, among others. Be that as it may, knowing the model and serial number is important and quite simple.
One of the fundamental factors to know this information is when processing the guarantee of the laptop . Surely they will ask you for a series of information, among them, the model and the serial number. They are also important data to find replacement parts if the laptop is already a few years old and is out of warranty. Still, this information is important for finding the best possible drivers.
We even recommend that you check the model before buying a new or second-hand laptop . Searching for the manufacturer and model of the laptop on Google will find all the information on the laptop. Why should I do this? If it is new, because surely the little sign of the store where you buy it will not give you all the specifications, such as the graphics model or year of manufacture. In case of buying it second hand , they could try to trick you or leave out important information.
The quickest and easiest way is to look at the sides of the laptop case, if you have one. The next point is to see the sticker located at the bottom of the laptop itself. If it has been removed or worn, don’t worry, Windows is a great sneak and will give us this information. Next, we will explain all the methods to find out the model and serial number of a laptop.
How to know the laptop model?
We have two fairly simple options, such as seeing the sticker that all laptops have in the lower area. If we are going to buy a second-hand laptop, it is better not to trust the sticker. It could be that it has been manipulated, come on, that they have put one that does not correspond. For this reason, it is better to enter Windows and verify the model with the data offered by the manufacturer.
See the back sticker
Something you should know is that all laptops, from the factory, have an informative sticker on the bottom. This sticker tells us all the certifications of the laptop and, above all, the exact model and serial number. So it’s as easy as turning it around and seeing that information, whether it’s to search for its specifications on Google, or for anything else we need. It could be that the sticker has worn off from use, which is relatively normal, so you will have to use one of the following methods that we describe.
If you have the laptop box or they sell it to you with it, you will also see this information on the side . All manufacturers print the model and serial number on the side of the box. One of the reasons, to prevent the wrong laptop from being distributed or the wrong laptop from being packaged.
As you can see in the image below, the sticker can be read clearly. In our case, an ASUS TUF laptop, even the year and month of manufacture is indicated.
Windows provides us with this information, as well as much other useful information. It is as simple as entering the system information option, where it will give us all the data on our laptop. Actually, many applications that read our computer to give us useful information like AIDA64, take the data from here. The procedure is the next:
- From the search box on the Windows taskbar , we must type System Information
- We will now click on System Information (we can also give intro)
- One of the first information that it shows us is System model , as we mark below these lines
Using the DirectX Diagnostic Tool
Most games today use the DirectX API and it installs natively with Windows. This tool is available on any system and will give us, more or less, the same information as the previous option. Accessing it is as easy as following these steps:
- From the search box on the Windows taskbar , we must type DXDiag
- We will press enter to run
- A small window will appear, where we will select Yes
- As you can see, the information displayed is exactly the same as in the previous option
Through the terminal or via PowerShell
If in addition to knowing the model, you need to know the serial number of the laptop, this is another very interesting option. Here it goes through the command line, being perhaps somewhat less intuitive. The truth is that it is not difficult either, simply enter said command and little else. It is done as follows:
- From the search box on the Windows taskbar , we must type CMD
- We will press enter to open the Command Prompt
- We enter the following command: wmic csproduct get name, identifyingnumber and press enter
- The “IdentifyingNumber” is the serial number and the “Name” is the model
We hope that this has been useful to you to certify that your laptop is the model that you bought and that they have not changed you at the time of selling your computer or in the technical service. In any case, we recommend you print or write down the information somewhere that you know that you can consult later if necessary. Especially after a format where it is sometimes necessary to manually search for some exclusive drivers for certain models.
