Ensuring the complete removal of data from an iPhone is crucial to safeguard our personal information when selling, giving away, or transferring the device. By thoroughly erasing our data, we can have peace of mind knowing that no trace of our sensitive information will be accessible to others. In this post, we will explore various safe methods available to accomplish this task effectively.
Erase the iPhone from the device itself
The initial method we can utilize to format the iPhone’s memory is through the device’s settings. By navigating to Settings > General > Reset, we will encounter two options at the bottom of the screen. The first option is “Reset.” When selected, a drop-down menu will appear, presenting the following choices:
1. Restore Settings: This action erases all custom settings and configurations we have made.
2. Restore Network Settings: This option solely removes information concerning Wi-Fi networks and their passwords that we have configured.
3. Restore Keyboard Dictionary: Only the content stored in the predictive keyboard, if enabled, will be deleted.
4. Reset Home Screen: By choosing this, the app icons return to their original arrangement, removing any created folders, widgets, or personalized layouts.
5. Reset Location and Privacy: Selecting this option deletes all access permissions granted to applications regarding location services and personal iPhone data they can access.

While the aforementioned options reset specific parameters of the phone, they do not encompass the complete deletion of our data, including Apple ID, Find My iPhone service, applications, photos, and videos. To achieve a comprehensive data wipe, we need to select the “Erase All Content and Settings” option within the same settings tab. By clicking on it, we are informed that the following will be eliminated:
1. All apps and associated data.
2. Apple ID credentials.
3. Find My iPhone service.
4. Information stored in Wallet and Apple Pay.
It’s important to note that if we proceed with deleting all our information, we will be prompted to perform the initial iPhone configuration. Consequently, any previous settings, regardless of their type, will not be retained. This process ensures that all stored data vanishes from the device, excluding what is saved in our iCloud storage.
By using the “Erase All Content and Settings” option, we can achieve a comprehensive data removal, effectively preparing the device for a fresh start.
Erase all content from a PC or Mac
If we prefer to perform the data deletion process with the iPhone connected to a computer, it is indeed possible. For Windows PC users, the iTunes program is required. Once the iPhone is connected via USB cable, we can locate the Restore option within iTunes.
On the other hand, Mac users can find the Restore option within the Finder menu. After connecting the iPhone, it will appear in the sidebar as a removable device. By exploring the available options, we will discover the Restore option. Selecting this option will restore the device to its factory settings, both on PC and Mac.
It’s crucial to note that during this process, it is important not to disconnect the phone from the computer. The connection should only be terminated once the restoration process is complete.
