The internal storage capacity of an Apple Watch is almost a mystery, since Apple does not usually show much of this information. In part it is normal, since it is not as relevant a data in a smartwatch as it is in a mobile or computer. In any case, even out of mere curiosity you may have, we will resolve this question and tell you what the capacity of each version is.
Why is this data not so important?
Really all the characteristics that a device has are important, although not all of them are relevant on a day-to-day basis. Using today with iPhone with 8, 16 and even 32 GB is not impossible, but it is very complicated to manage. However, in the brand’s watches it is practically anecdotal. Most of the data is stored on the iPhone , since the Apple Watch has limited the possibility of saving photos in its internal memory, relegating that amount to one in which it is guaranteed that the occupied space does not exceed the limit. Neither do the files generated from applications such as the electrocardiogram take up too much space, since in this case they are stored directly on the associated phone.
While it is true that there is content as a podcast available for download, at least in the GPS + Cellular version, in the end they are not really heavy files to fill up the memory. In any case, the watchOS system optimizes space automatically so as not to reach a point where it runs out of free space.
Internal memory of the Apple Watch
While there is usually not a really large variation between generations of the Apple Watch, there have been interesting jumps between them.
- Apple Watch (original) : 8 GB.
- Apple Watch Series 1 : 8 GB.
- Apple Watch Series 2 : 8 GB.
- Apple Watch Series 3 : 8 GB (GPS) or 16 GB (GPS + Cellular)
- Apple Watch Series 4 : 16 GB.
- Apple Watch Series 5 : 32 GB.
- Apple Watch Series 6 : 32GB.
- Apple Watch SE : 32 GB.
The case of the Apple Watch Series 3 is curious, since it is the only watch of the brand to date that has a different capacity depending on whether it is in its GPS version or the GPS + Cellular version. The latter is the one that allows you to contract a mobile data rate for the device without depending on WiFi or the iPhone, so it is understandable that it has greater capacity.
How much does the Apple Watch operating system occupy?
As in any device of this type, the storage capacity available to the Apple Watch is not fully available to the user. There is a part that has to be dedicated to watchOS , the operating system that these watches run. Although there are no exact figures of how much each version ends up occupying in each watch, it is said that it occupies around 5 GB , so the capacities of all these computers would really have to be subtracted from that amount.
How to find out how much memory your Apple Watch has left
Linked to the above, there is a way you can calculate how much space watchOS is taking up on your Apple Watch and, incidentally, see how much space you have left on the device. To do this you must open the clock applications menu, go to Settings> General> Information . You can also check it in the iPhone Watch app , going to the “My watch” tab and following the General> Information path.
In this mentioned section you will find important data such as the name you have given or the serial number of the device, but also the total internal memory capacity that you have at your disposal, subtracting the GB that watchOS occupies and, of course, the free space. It should be noted that here you can also check the number of songs, photos and applications that you have stored on your computer.
