Google dropped the bomb yesterday. The internet company will officially end its free and unlimited storage service in Google Photos for those who choose to upload photos in original quality. Instead, everyone will be given a 15GB cap that goes into effect on June 1, 2021.
Google , at the same time, claimed that the most modern phones will continue to have free storage for photos in original quality, however, this does not happen with models launched before the Google Pixel 3a. Google has confirmed that these changes will apply to future Pixel phones as well, presumably the Pixel 5a and Pixel 6 that should arrive sometime in 2021.
Here are the conditions for the different Google smartphones :
- Pixel (2016): ” Unlimited free storage in original quality, but you will not be able to upload photos or videos in high quality.”
- Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL: Free storage until January 16, 2021, in original quality for videos and photos. “From January 16, 2021, new photos and videos will be uploaded in high quality for free. If you upload new photos and videos in original quality, the space will be subtracted from the storage quota.”
- Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL: Free storage until January 31, 2022, in original quality for videos and photos. “Starting January 31, 2022, new photos and videos will be uploaded in high quality for free. If you upload new photos and videos in original quality, the space will be subtracted from the storage quota.”
- Pixel 3a, Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL, Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5: Photos and videos that you upload in high quality from Pixel 3a to 5 models are free and unlimited, but those that you upload in original quality will be taken into account in the storage space of your Google account.
What incentives are left in the Google Pixel?
Free and unlimited storage was one of the great advantages of having a Google Pixel, but the brand usually also offers promotions with some of its services, such as Google Drive or YouTube Music. It is expected that these promotions continue to be active when buying a new smartphone from the firm.
In addition, we cannot forget that the Google smartphones of the Pixel family continue to boast of pure stock versions and large cameras at a good value for money, but it remains to be seen if their decisions regarding Google Photos change after the poor reception of users .
