When Was Apple Founded? The Date, Three Founders and First Computers

Apple was founded on April 1, 1976. Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne formed the original Apple Computer Company partnership. The later incorporation in 1977 is a different milestone, which explains why accounts of Apple’s early history sometimes mention two years.

When Was Apple Founded? The Date, Three Founders and First Computers

The short timeline

When What happened
April 1, 1976 The original Apple Computer Company partnership began.
1976 The Apple-1 became the first product associated with the new company.
1977 The business incorporated and the Apple II helped it reach a wider market.
April 1, 2026 Apple reached its 50th anniversary.

Apple itself identifies April 1, 1976 in its 50th-anniversary announcement. The Computer History Museum’s Apple timeline provides the broader sequence of the partnership and early products.

What did the founders do?

Wozniak designed the early computer hardware. Jobs concentrated on turning the design into a business and selling the product. Wayne helped formalize the partnership and created the early logo and documentation. His involvement was brief, but he was a co-founder; leaving him out produces an incomplete list.

The museum preserves an Apple-1 manual associated with that early period. It is a useful reminder that Apple’s first product belonged to the home-computer era, long before the Macintosh, iPod or iPhone.

What was the Apple-1?

It was a computer board, not a complete modern computer with a built-in display, keyboard and finished consumer enclosure. Thinking of it as an early iMac gives the wrong impression of what buyers received and how much equipment they had to provide themselves.

The Apple II represented a different stage in making the business a larger personal-computer company. The two products should not be collapsed into one launch simply because their names are similar.

Was everything invented in a garage?

The garage is an important image in Apple’s story, but it is too simple as a complete explanation. Hardware design, early demonstrations, orders, assembly and business formation are different activities. A useful history identifies which event a source describes rather than attaching every step to one location.

Also separate the date of the event from the date of a retrospective article. Our web-article date-checking guide explains how publication dates, revisions and archived copies differ. For Apple’s founding date, the original company milestone remains April 1, 1976; later anniversaries and legal changes do not replace it.
