Google Podcasts to Migrate to YouTube Music: What It Means for Users

In recent years, Google has made decisions that have disrupted the routines of users relying on its services, as it has chosen to shutter some of them. While certain endeavors, like Google Stadia, faced inevitable setbacks, others, such as Google Reader in the past, stood out as exceptional platforms. However, Google Podcasts is the latest platform slated for closure.

Google ventured into the podcast realm in 2018 with the introduction of Google Podcasts as an Android application. Initially, it lacked numerous features compared to rival applications of its kind, resulting in a tepid reception.

Over two years, the app underwent a complete overhaul, culminating in its relaunch on iOS. It was at this juncture that the application gained favor among podcast enthusiasts, amassing over 500 million downloads and earning high acclaim from the community.

The Transition to YouTube Music

Google, in its announcement regarding the discontinuation of Google Podcasts, clarified that this move doesn’t signify a complete departure from the audio format. Instead, it intends to migrate podcasts to YouTube Music.

While not explicitly stated, Google’s strategy mirrors that of Spotify, a platform that judiciously integrated podcasts into its application. This seamless integration allows users to seamlessly transition between music and podcasts. A similar approach may also be in store for audiobooks in the future.

Late last year, Google provided a select group of users with the ability to upload podcasts to YouTube Music. Evidently, this feature has proven successful, prompting Google to proceed with the transition.

It’s worth noting that a method for content creators to migrate their existing content from Google Podcasts to YouTube Music will be introduced. Additionally, users will have the option to export their podcast subscriptions as an OPML file containing RSS feeds, facilitating a seamless transition to alternative podcast players.

While Google has announced the impending availability of podcasts on YouTube Music, the specific closure date for Google Podcasts remains undisclosed, likely scheduled for early next year. Content creators will no longer be able to upload new audio content to Google Podcasts, encouraging users to make the switch to YouTube Music.
