And it is that in these times, few are those who do not have a program of this type installed on their devices. Whether we are talking about desktops or mobile devices, a browser is present in almost all of them. Thus, after the failure of Redmond’s signature with the original Edge that it launched with Windows 10, it has decided to renew itself. Right now we can get hold of the new version of the program, now based on Chromium, with which we want to compete directly with Chrome.
But of course, that is not going to be easy, especially if we take into account the enormous market penetration of Google’s proposal. With everything and with this, Microsoft has set the goal here, to once again be important in this constantly growing sector. This is something that, as you will remember, in its day happened with Microsoft Explorer, for example. But largely because of the ill-fame that the past Edge acquired, many users are still reluctant to migrate to the new one.
The problem with the RAM consumption of browsers
However, it does present some interesting features worth mentioning, as is the case in which we will focus on these lines. The truth is that its operation is quite fluid, and some of its characteristics allow us to take great advantage of our long sessions on the Internet. But of course, these are programs that to satisfy the requirements and needs of the majority, do not stop growing in terms of their functionality .
To all this we can add the burden that many of the websites we visit daily, the excessive use of tabs , or the installation of extensions. This is something that actually translates into one of the biggest problems that many of these browsers run into. Actually we refer to the high consumption of PC resources that they do constantly. In fact at this point we could say that, along with everything related to security, this is one of the handicaps that its developers face.
There are several measures that in the beginning and from our part we can take to solve this problem. For example, we can reduce the use of extensions installed in the program itself, or close inactive tabs. At the same time we have the possibility of closing certain threads that we find open in the Windows Task Manager and that do nothing, only consume memory.
But as we have mentioned before, this is a program that is currently in full growth. That is why those of Redmond do not stop launching and introducing new features to their program to improve it over time. In order to solve this that we talked about before the consumption of RAM and CPU , we now have Tabs on standby in Edge.
What is Edge’s Standby Tabs feature
As you can imagine, this is something that Redmond have implemented in order to save PC RAM while using Edge. To give you an idea of what we are talking about, there are some users who prefer to have dozens of tabs open at the same time when browsing. Clearly, in most cases many are unnecessary, while consuming precious system memory for no reason. In fact they are unable to close some of these elements, for them they are all necessary. But of course, the overall performance of the team itself can be seriously impaired. Hence precisely the usefulness of the function that we will talk about below. Its name is Tabs on hold, which can give us an idea of what we will talk about here.
This feature that we can make use of in Edge, can be of enormous help when it comes to saving RAM memory while we use many tabs. So what this function does is, instead of closing all these tabs, it puts them in sleep mode, suspending them after they have been inactive for a certain time. With this, suspending a tab reduces the amount of RAM and CPU you can use in the background. Of course, when we open the tab in question again, it starts working automatically.
Activate and configure the Tabs on hold function in Edge
The first thing we should know is that Edge standby tabs is something that is available in the browser from version 88 of the mime. At the same time it is something that we can take advantage of both on Windows and on Mac and Linux .

In order to benefit from all this, the first thing we will do is access the program as such in a conventional way. Next, what we must do is open the Edge menu through the three-point button located in the upper right corner, where we opt for Settings .
Once we find the Settings window on the screen, in the left panel we go to the System option. At that moment what we have to do is locate a section called Save resources. Therefore, once we find it, all we have to do is activate the selector that says Save resources with waiting tabs to be able to use the functionality.
Once we have activated the selector, the utility automatically starts marking, but we recommend adjusting a couple of its options.
Configure the Edge feature to save RAM
Well, at this point we will tell you that the first thing we can do here is you can decide how long it should take before a tab is suspended. For this we just have to click on the drop-down menu and choose a duration. Here we have the possibility to choose between 5 minutes of inactivity, up to 12 hours.
Likewise, and from this same section, we can create a custom whitelist. This means that we can specify those websites that we never want to be put to sleep, to achieve this what we do is click on the Add button
