Personalization is a very important aspect in Xiaomi, its multiple options to change the appearance of the personalization layer make possible many modifications that are mostly related to the application of themes. But in addition to the themes that are available within, we have the options to download and install external themes on our Xiaomi mobile.
Until recently the MIUI theme application was limited in Europe and we are forced to follow some steps to get it activated, but now we can easily access it and allow ourselves more customization options as we are going to show you. We’ll start with the simplest steps, and then we’ll show you how to take theme customization further.
Install internal themes in MIUI
The application that we will find on our Xiaomi mobile and that will give us access to Xiaomi’s own themes is called Themes. From the application we will only have to search the different categories and search methods for a topic that we like, paying attention to the free topics. Once we have found one that we liked, we just played on this one.
Before installing it we will have to download it on the button that says free or buy if it is paid. Then the option to apply appears and at the top several options to only apply it in one of the aspects that allows us, although for this it is better to go to the next step.
Customize themes on Xiaomi
To give a different touch to the result and adapt it to our tastes, we can customize our own theme according to different parts of other themes. To do this we will use the themes application but in this case we access the last tab that corresponds to our profile. Then we enter the option to customize themes and give way to your options.

- Power On Image
- Ignition sound
Each of these options can be modified with a different style. When accessing each section, the themes that we have installed will appear to make use of that specific section of the theme. Once we have chosen all the styles we just have to touch at the bottom about making a backup and the change will be made and saved in our Mi account.
Install external themes on Xiaomi
However if we want to give a unique touch to our Xiaomi mobile we can open more possibilities and get themes that are not in the themes application. The places where we can find these themes are the MIUI Themez website or also in the MIUI community section. From these sites we will be able to find themes that come from designs that have only been launched in China, India or freelance designers.
Steps to install third party themes
First of all we have to choose one of the themes from any of the two sources that we offer you, once selected we enter and look for the download link that will direct us to one of the portals that are available on the Internet. The files are free of malware and we need not worry.
- After having downloaded it, we access the file manager that already includes Xiaomi phones.
- We look in downloads for the file that will have mtz.zip ending.
- Hold down the files until you see the options.
- We choose to rename and remove .zip from the name.
- We accept the changes and automatically the icon will change.
The next thing we have to do is download the Theme Editor for MIUI app from the Google app store. This app will allow us to add the theme to the official Xiaomi application in a few seconds and in a few simple steps. We install it like any other app and access it.
- Within the application we touch pick a theme.
- Among the files we go to downloads or the location of the file that we renamed previously.
- We select it and tap on accept.
- Finally on the home page we will see the selected topic above and choose the start option.
- On the next screen we just have to tap next.
- Again we only have to touch this time in finish and install .
With these last steps we already have the theme installed and it is only a matter of going to the themes application, checking the themes that we have installed and we will find the new one that we have added. We can also use it to shape our own theme as we have seen previously.
