DJI Mavic Air 2: Full Features, Price and News

After some leaks the new Mavic Air 2 is already a reality . DJI updates and launches a second version of one of its most interesting drones with which it clearly levels it up. So much so that, in this case, beyond being a successor to the Air it could be considered as an improvement of the Mavic 2 with its corresponding reduction in size.

Mavic Air 2, more in less size

DJI Mavic Air 2

DJI is one of those manufacturers that when it seems that they cannot offer much more go and surprise you. This time with the Mavic Air 2 , a drone that we already knew some of the main data, but that is now when we have the complete photograph of what could be the new great ally of many content creators. Because this drone inherits some of the most interesting aspects of the Mavic Mini, but without the limitations of its camera and flight system.

More compact design

The Mavic Air already turned out to be a fairly compact drone, but the advances in design by the company made the Mavic Mini find a much more interesting form factor. That idea, which we also saw in the Mavic Pro, is what we now have in this new proposal.

The Mavic Air 2 is a compact drone , but very well optimized in terms of the design of all its physical elements. The folding arms make use of a system that allows a greater length, which gives greater stability in flight and the possibility of not giving up certain components such as the APAS 3.0 system for a safer and smarter flight .

In this way, the dimensions of the folded drone are 180 x 97 x 84 mm and when it is deployed it already goes to 183 x 253 x 77 mm. On the other hand, the weight with battery included is 570 gr. The latter means that under current legislation it cannot be flown in city settings and with people unless the necessary permits are available.

It is not like the Mavic Mini , which due to its weight of less than 250 gr, has been given some more options for recreational flight within cities or towns. Although you will also remember, and if we do not tell you again, as long as you are not flying within a controlled airspace (CTR) as is the case in most areas here in Spain.

Improved flight system

In terms of flight, the Mavic Air 2 has improved compared to its previous generation, and even with other models that until now were considered superior to the Air family. This is logical, if it includes new improvements at technology and design level. But let’s go by parts.

This drone allows a 10 kM 1080p resolution video transmission distance thanks to OcuSync 2.0. You are not going to get as far away from the drone, because you have to maintain a certain line of sight, but thanks to this what they indicate is that you will be able to make certain flights without fear of losing the signal and, therefore, control of what is happening with the device.

Regarding the flight, with the APAS 3.0 system and thanks to the use of the different sensors, it will be safer. So, if you are an inexperienced pilot, you will have certain additional guarantees when making the first flights. Although, once you practice a little you become fast with your flight and control system.

Otherwise, you can now fly a maximum of 34 minutes . A theoretical time that will be reduced depending on the flight conditions, such as the wind and type of flight you make, but it is already an interesting improvement over the previous model.

Remote control for pilots

The remote control of the Mavic Air 2 has also been redesigned and, according to DJI, thinking about the needs that the pilots have been transmitting to it. So, we could say that from now on it will be the scheme that we will get used to.

In this new control, the grip indicates that it will be much more comfortable, it increases the size of the battery and allows the phones that we are going to use as a screen to be placed more easily and quickly. All this with an improvement in the antennas, which are now integrated and would again improve the experience of use.

Higher quality videos and photos

However, the most interesting thing about any drone is its camera system. This time DJI has included a 48 MP sensor with which you can record 4K resolution video and higher quality photos as you will see below.

The video that can record reaches 4K resolution and 60 fps , it is the first DJI drone in this price line that records at this quality and is at the level of the Phantom 4. This does not lack the support of the D-color profile Cinelike that achieves a greater dynamic range by capturing a flatter image that then gives more options when working with the material in post-production.

Said video, as it was already happening, is captured using the HEVC codec (H.265). This not only has the advantage of capturing more information, but also taking up less space on the card and thus giving more recording time. Finally, there is also an HDR video option, something interesting for those recordings in which due to an excess of light we could come to suffer overexposed skies if we wanted the rest of the elements to be perfectly exposed.

In photographic subjects, with a 48 MP sensor and a size of 1/2 inches, the promise of DJI is that of images with a higher level of detail, HDR support and an intelligent mode called Smartphoto that allows to adequately expose the image both in high light situations as little.

There is also an option to perform Hyperlapse at 8K resolution and with the Free, Orbit, Fixed Heading and Trajectory modes to be able to replicate the capture at different times of the day and to be able to carry out a much more attractive audiovisual project that shows everything that happens in a day or longer term.

If we add to all this the different intelligent photo and video capture modes, such as those that form Focustrack (Active track 3.0, Spotlight 2.0 and PDI 3.0) or QuickShots (Dronie, Orbit, Spiral, Rocket, Boomeran and Asteroid), They result in a device with which it is very easy to capture very cinematic video even when we do it alone, without the help of anyone who controls the flight of the device.
