Meet the D-Link DSS-100E PoE Long Range Switches for IP Cameras

The manufacturer D-Link has announced the launch of a new series of very interesting PoE switches, these new switches will allow us to power devices such as IP cameras 250 meters away. The new D-Link DSS-100E family has Long Range PoE technology , which allows it to increase from a maximum of 100 meters of wired distance, up to 250 meters of distance , but sacrificing something very important: we will not have Gigabit Ethernet speed, but only Fast-Ethernet , that is, at 100Mbps. However, in video surveillance areas having more than 20Mbps is more than enough to see in Full HD resolution with great quality. Do you want to know the main characteristics of these new switches?

D-Link DSS-100E PoE Long Range Switches

These new D-Link DSS-100E switches are specifically designed to deploy video surveillance systems in locations far removed from PoE switches. Sometimes we need more distance than the typical 100 meters of wiring. Thanks to the incorporation of the new Long Range PoE standard up to 250 meters, we will be able to cover large areas such as industrial warehouses and even in hotels where we have IP cameras outside the enclosure. The manufacturer D-Link has presented a total of two models, which we detail below.

D-Link DSS-100E-9P

The main characteristics of this switch are the incorporation of a total of 9 10/100 Fast-Ethernet ports with the PoE Long Range standard, it also has a Gigabit Ethernet port, and will allow us to power equipment with the 802.3af / at standard, for which will provide us with a power per port of up to 30W, with a PoE Budget of 92W. This switch has a technology that allows detecting when long-range support is needed, and automatically activates the extended mode without having to do any manual configuration, it is all automatic.

The price of this switch is 83 euros.

D-Link DSS-100E-18P

The main characteristics of this switch are the incorporation of a total of 16 10/100 Fast-Ethernet ports with the PoE Long Range standard, it also has a Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 port and another Combo RJ-45 / SFP port at 1Gbps. This switch will allow us to power equipment with the 802.3af / at standard, so it will provide us with power per port of up to 30W, with a PoE Budget of 230W. This switch does not have a technology that allows detecting when long-range support is needed, we must activate it ourselves through a physical switch on the equipment itself.

A very important characteristic of both models is that we have at least one Gigabit Ethernet port, ideal for correctly configuring the backbone network, or connecting the switch to the NVR recording server that we have, and not having a bottleneck due to the Fast-Ethernet interface . This is something very important, because we could have a bottleneck in the backbone if we only have Fast-Ethernet connectivity.

Other important characteristics are that both models have 6000V protection against overvoltages in all ports and the power supply, which increases the security and reliability of the switch and the connected devices, something very important in video surveillance installations, where Cameras in outdoor areas are exposed to adverse weather conditions, and could cause some kind of short circuit. At the firmware level, the DSS-100E-18P has an “isolation” mode that allows only the switch ports where the NVR is placed to be active.

The price of this switch is 160 euros.
