Apparently the open source project proposed to remove this feature in October 2021. The developers here felt that removing search engines was too easy for the user. Thus, the change was carried out in Chromium 97.
As expected, Chrome 97 which was released a few days ago, became the first Chromium browser to remove search engine scrubbing . Later Opera, Edge and Brave have followed suit.
