China researchers break the 5G speed record with 3 Gbps

The fifth generation or 5G mobile network has been evolving for years to offer us low latency, better coverage and faster connection speeds. Just a few days ago, Nokia, China Mobile and Mediatek successfully verified a new independent 5G speed record using Carrier Aggregation technology in Shanghai.

Although there are many advantages that 5G technology brings us, part of the population is against it due to the possibility that the fifth generation network is bad for health. As we have already mentioned, there are many advantages that come with 5G : having more connected devices, reducing energy consumption, low latency and a direct approach to IoT that makes everything around us smart. Now, Nokia, China Mobile and MediaTek announce that they have successfully verified the world’s first 3-Component (3CC) Carrier Aggregation (CA) technology in Shanghai, China.

China researchers break the 5G speed record with 3 Gbps

Higher yield and better coverage

The independent speed record of nearly 3 Gbps in downlink performance using Nokia’s commercial 5G Airscale portfolio, China Mobile’s network and MediaTek’s mobile platform in Shanghai combines three component carriers in the 5G FDD spectrum (30 MHz of 700 MHz/n28) and 5G TDD spectrum (100+60 MHz of 2.6 GHz/n41) to improve both network speed and coverage area. In addition, Nokia is the “first 5G RAN provider to provide downlink carrier aggregation with three component carriers in China Mobile’s network.”

This move will enable communication service providers to offer better coverage to more customers, as well as superior mobile broadband and HD video services . For this test, Nokia’s AirScale 5G baseband and MediaTek’s flagship Dimensity 9000 5G mobile platform were used on the CMCC network, marking the first time that frequency bands n28 (700 MHz band; 30 MHz) and n41 ( 2.6 GHz band; 100+60 MHz) are combined successfully.

With this test “the user experience increased in a converged network of 700 MHz/2.6 GHz to reach a maximum downlink speed of 2.94 Gbps”. CA uses the Primary Cell Switch functionality , which combines frequency bands to offer superior network capacity by maximizing the spectral efficiency of fifth generation networks. This results in higher data rates, superior indoor performance, and increased coverage area.

The potential of 5G to the limit

CA combines frequency bands for higher data rates and wider coverage, delivering superior network capacity by maximizing the spectral efficiency of 5G networks . The combination of 5G FDD and TDD bands combined with carrier aggregation is able to take full advantage of spectrum synergy. As a consequence, the cost of building the network is reduced and the coverage and user experience are improved.

JS Pan, General Manager, Wireless Communication Technology at MediaTek, said: “Through this three-way collaboration, we have successfully demonstrated the technical advantages of DL 3CC CA using FDD+TDD. Smartphones with the new flagship 5G mobile platform Dimensity 9000 and upcoming Dimensity 5G mobile platforms will be able to take advantage of this cutting-edge 5G connectivity feature, and MediaTek will continue to work closely with industry partners to set new milestones for 5G. developing.”.
