Want ChatGPT on your Windows PC? Start with OpenAI’s official Windows download guide, install the app, and sign in with your ChatGPT account. You can also use ChatGPT in a browser if you do not want to install anything.
This page originally covered the Windows launch in 2024. It now explains how to get started, what free access means, and what to check when the app or a feature is missing.
How to download and install ChatGPT on Windows
- Open the official Windows guide linked above and follow its current download instructions.
- Check the installer or store listing for compatibility with your PC. Use the official listing rather than an installer from a download directory.
- Install the app, open it, and sign in with your own ChatGPT account.
- Choose ChatGPT and start a chat. OpenAI’s getting-started guide explains the first steps.
You do not need a separate third-party “ChatGPT for PC” subscription. If a download page asks you to buy an unrelated product, return to OpenAI’s guide before paying.
Is ChatGPT for Windows free?
ChatGPT has a Free plan, but installing the desktop app does not unlock every feature or remove usage limits. Access depends on your plan and rollout. Check OpenAI’s current plan information before upgrading for a particular feature.
Use your own account. If you are trying to save money, our guide to ChatGPT account-sharing rules and ways to save explains the options.
What can you use the app for?
Start with an ordinary request, such as “Explain this Windows error in simple words.” If your interface offers several choices, OpenAI describes them this way:
| Choice | Useful for |
|---|---|
| Chat | Questions, explanations, and short writing tasks. |
| ChatGPT Work | A larger task with a result to review, such as a report. |
| Codex | Coding tasks and developer tools. |
For better answers, include the details that matter: your Windows version, the exact error, what you have tried, and the result you want. Review suggested changes before applying them to your PC.
Voice and app settings
ChatGPT Voice in the current desktop app is available on eligible paid plans, including Plus, Pro, Business, Edu, and Enterprise, subject to rollout and workspace settings. It needs microphone permission. Voice conversation and dictation are different features, so a microphone icon alone does not prove that full Voice is enabled.
Open app settings from the menu or press Ctrl + , on Windows. Check the controls shown in your version instead of relying on an old shortcut list.
What to check if something does not work
| Problem | First thing to check |
|---|---|
| The installer will not run | Read its compatibility message. On a work or school PC, ask IT whether installation is allowed. |
| The app will not open | Close it, restart Windows, and check for an official app update. Try the browser while you troubleshoot. |
| Your paid access seems missing | Check the signed-in account and selected workspace against the account used for your subscription. |
| A feature is missing | Check plan eligibility, rollout, and workspace restrictions before reinstalling. |
| Voice cannot hear you | Check the selected microphone and Windows microphone permission. End any other active ChatGPT voice chat. |
Keep the exact error message when asking for help. Avoid repeatedly installing different copies of the app: changing one thing at a time makes the cause easier to find.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need the app to use ChatGPT on a PC?
No. The browser version is an alternative when you cannot or do not want to install the app.
Does installing the app give me unlimited free use?
No. Your account’s plan and usage limits still apply.
Can I write in a language other than English?
Start your message in the language you want and ask for the answer in that language. The language of a reply is separate from the app’s menus.
Do I need coding tools for an ordinary chat?
No. Start with Chat for everyday questions; choose developer tools only when the task calls for them.
Why does my app look different from the picture?
The image shows an earlier store listing. App layouts and available controls can change.
Should I pay if a feature is missing?
Check its current eligibility first. A workspace restriction or gradual rollout may also explain why you do not see it.
What should I send to support?
Include the error text, app version, Windows version, and what you already tried. Remove private information from screenshots.
