Microsoft‘s failures with web browsers bring a tail. Since the decline of Internet Explorer began, until now, the company has not only lost most of the market share, it has lost the trust of users. Most of these prefer to use Chrome or Firefox over Microsoft’s browser. For this reason, the company has been forced to completely break with the past and create a new browser from scratch: Edge . And what better way to play than at the home of its main rival, Chrome, with whom it shares the same web engine.
Microsoft has long complained that many Edge functions and features weren’t present in Chrome. However, for obvious reasons, the company did not go to work for its rival. Now that Microsoft has adopted Chromium as the engine of its new browser, it is working on all these features that were missing in Chrome. And, since Chromium development is open, almost everything is available to others. And Google, of course, is taking the opportunity to add these functions to your browser.
New features in Chrome for Windows 10
If we have ever compared the vertical scrolling of Chrome with that of the classic versions of Edge, we have surely seen a big difference. While Chrome’s vertical scrolling , or scroll , is bumpy, Edge’s is very smooth and fluid. This was undoubtedly one of the best features of Microsoft’s browser. However, when making the leap to Chromium, this scroll disappeared due to the fact that the engine was not compatible with it and that it was only intended to work in UWP applications.
Now, Microsoft is working on a new API that will allow the new Edge, and any other Chromium-based browser, to make use of this feature. This new feature is coming soon with the name ” Impulse ” and will make scrolling Edge, Chrome and other browsers much smoother and more responsive.
Although for now we do not know when this change will arrive, Microsoft assures that it is almost ready, and that we will be able to see it very soon. In addition, it will be enabled by default in your browser , and surely in all the others, including Chrome. And we can use it both when visiting web pages and when opening other documents.
In addition to this, we cannot forget about SegmentHeap , a function included in the latest versions of Windows thanks to which the use of the browser’s RAM memory will be significantly reduced . And Microsoft promises that it will also bring many other improvements to Chrome. And the most imminent will improve the dark theme of the browser, allowing you, among other things, to color black (or darken) the scroll bars.
Time to switch to Edge?
In general, people are reluctant to switch web browsers. The browser is where we keep all our data (bookmarks, passwords, history, etc.) and, in addition, it is through which we keep all our data synchronized with other PCs and our mobiles. For this reason, making the leap to a new browser, taking all our data and changing the way we use it, is sometimes complicated.
But Edge is different . to begin with, it uses the same engine as Chrome, so it offers us the same functions and features as Google’s browser, but with many more additions and more privacy to offer users something “different”, something new.
