Call without mobile coverage: which operators have WiFi calls?

WiFi calls, as their name suggests, are calls that we would normally make through a mobile network but that use the WiFi connection for it. We do not need to have special applications like WhatsApp or Skype or Telegram to do them, but it is the operator itself and the phone (as long as they are both compatible) that will allow us to do them.

We need a WiFi network to be connected to, of course, a mobile phone that is compatible with this technology and that our operator is too. Generally the first two requirements are easy to meet but not all operators are available to call using WiFi.

Call without mobile coverage

What advantages does it have? The first and foremost is that you don’t need to have mobile coverage to call because we use the wireless network. If you live in a rural area where you have ADSL or fiber but there is not good coverage to call, for example, this would allow us to make calls without any effort or problem.

But we must bear in mind that this is not the same as calling using applications such as Skype. WiFi calls are normal calls you make from your phone, at the user level. You select the contact you want in the agenda and call. He receives a normal call. But the difference with the conventional ones is that voice is used through WiFi to achieve better quality, avoid cuts, improve coverage… But at the user level there is no change and we will not see any difference in the bill or in the contracted rate .

Operators with WiFi calls

Who allows WiFi calls? You may have the wireless network and you may have a compatible phone, but the most important thing is: which operator has them.

Orange allows Wi-Fi calls at no extra cost to the user and as long as we have a phone that is compatible with them and we activate them from the smartphone settings. As explained on their website, calls will be charged the same as any other call with your rate and will be included in the contracted minute rate or unlimited calls if they are included.

O2 also allows WiFi calls in addition to VoLTE calls if you have a compatible phone, coverage and the feature is enabled in settings. Like the previous one, they are not charged extra and are part of the unlimited calls of the rate.

Movistar also offers VoLTE and VoWiFI calls to its customers once we activate it in the settings. And it offers them by default to all clients.

Vodafone is also already compatible with this technology, since October 2022. The operator now offers the option of using the WiFi network as an extension of the mobile coverage to make calls and speak with better validity and without interruptions. They will be exactly the same as normal calls if we have a compatible phone and we activate them and we will not see any change in the rate or in roaming.

There are other operators that do not yet have these calls, as is the case of MÁSMÓVIL , which does not yet offer it to its customers.
