We have talked on many other occasions about what DNS is and what it is for, especially thinking about Internet browsing from our computers. However, today there are more and more connected devices that we have in our homes. Without going any further, the fact that both online games, as well as their downloads and updates have become popular today, makes it very important to have a connection as fast and stable as possible so that our experience with the games is the best possible. In this sense, DNS can play an important role.

What are DNS and what are they for?

DNS or Domain Name System is a decentralized hierarchical nomenclature system for connected devices, either over the Internet or in private networks. This system associates information with the domain name, that is, its main function is to translate the domain name to an IP address. It is really a large distributed and hierarchical database in which the information associated with the domain name is stored and which is capable of associating with your IP addresses.

In this way, when we write in our browser the name of a domain, it is translated to the corresponding IP address to go to the server where it is located and obtain the information requested to display it in the browser.

By default, when we hire an Internet connection with any operator, it is the company itself that assigns us a default DNS. However, the use of alternative servers has been popularized, as they offer certain advantages over those established by default.

Advantages of alternative DNS servers

Between the different alternative DNS servers and those of the operators we can say that there are certain differences that can help us make our connection more stable and faster, but also, they can offer us certain interesting functions:

  1. Stability : Alternate DNS servers offer greater reliability, stability and greater real uptime.
  2. Speed : usually offer load speeds lower than the DNS of the operators.
  3. Security : some of these alternative DNS offers protection against phishing.
  4. Added functions:
    1. Avoid restrictions : They allow access to domains blocked by geolocation.
    2. Parental control : Some also offer the possibility of creating certain filters to protect access to pages with unwanted content.
