AV-Comparatives September 2020 – Best and Worst Antivirus

Nowadays it is not at all recommended to connect to the Internet without an antivirus . With the simple fact of connecting, even if we do not open any website, we will already be putting our PC in danger. A good antivirus helps us protect ourselves from all the threats and all the dangers that are hidden in the network so that we can fully enjoy everything that the network offers us. However, not all security software protects us equally. Do you know if yours is offering you a protection to match?

Analyzing an antivirus ourselves is very complicated. The test viruses will detect them without problems, and it is very difficult to find zero-day malware that really allows us to check the security of this software. For this reason, there are organizations that are responsible for testing these security programs in a series of controlled environments to see how they protect us.

AV-Comparatives September 2020

AV Comparatives is one of the most prestigious organizations when it comes to testing the security of antivirus programs. This company usually publishes security reports periodically thanks to which we will be able to know if we are really protected with our AV or if we can be in danger, at the mercy of hackers.

This company has made public its new safety reports made between July and August of this year. And thanks to them, we will be able to see the protection offered by security software in Windows 10, with all the updated third-party software.

Winners and Losers: Best and Worst Antivirus Summer 2020

Although the detailed report will not be published for another couple of months, AV Comparatives lets us see a summary of all the antivirus analyzed. The tests carried out by this company are much more exhaustive than those carried out by others, such as AV-Test. For this reason, it is more common to find programs that, although they seemed perfect in other tests, in these they leave a little to be desired.

Test AV Comparatives q3 2020

We can only find 4 antivirus that have been able to block 100% of the threats they have faced:

  • F-Secure
  • G Data
  • Panda
  • Trend Micro

Of course, although they have blocked 100% of the threats, these antivirus have returned a significant number of false positives to the user. Especially F-Secure and Trend Micro. If you suspect everything, it is normal that you are able to block everything.

For the rest, the rest of antivirus has more or less remained in line. Although there are cases in which the detection rate has dropped too much, as has happened with McAfee, Total Defense, Total AV and, curiously, Microsoft Defender .

Is Windows Defender a good security program?

Windows Defender is Microsoft’s free antivirus that is installed by default in Windows 10. Other security tests place it as one of the best that we can install. However, the AV-Comparatives tests put it a bit in doubt.

Microsoft’s antivirus “only” has been able to detect and block 99.2% of antivirus samples, leaving the user exposed to 0.8% of them. Furthermore, this software has generated 5 false positives, which means that 5 files, which were not malware, have been considered as such.

Windows Defender Configuración This does not mean that Windows Defender is a bad antivirus , far from it. Just as a detection rate of 100% does not mean that it will protect us from 100% of viruses, but that it has detected 100% of the samples analyzed.

The free Windows 10 antivirus is still one of the best options that we can install on our computer. Excellent security software, which comes installed, configured and activated with the operating system, and which, with a little care on our part, will help us to be fully protected.
