Are iPhone 12 cases compatible with iPhone 13?

A little over a week ago, Apple introduced the highly anticipated iPhone 13. And we speak in the plural because, as is customary in the brand lately, they launched 4 new devices. Being the natural substitutes for the ’12’, many have the great doubt about whether the iPhone 12 cases work for the iPhone 13. And no, they are not compatible for various reasons.

The reasons why there is no compatibility

On the one hand we have the iPhone 12 mini, 12, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max. These do not have in their predecessors any smartphone from which to inherit cases, since they presented a renewed design with curved edges that only resemble the already old iPhone 4 and 5, which have totally different sizes that discard them in compatibility. Although, yes, we find compatibility between iPhone 12 and 12 Pro cases because they are the same size.

And although aesthetically it may seem that the entire ’12’ family is identical to the ’13, the truth is that it is not. The first is due to the increase in thickness in the new devices, caused in large part by an increase in their batteries. Although this could in a way be saved by being a few millimeters apart, the predominant reason for the incompatibility is found in the camera module , which has grown considerably in the most recent iPhones.

Apple has introduced improvements in photography and video with the iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max that required an increase in the lenses and consequently the rear module that integrates them. While it is true that in the ’12 Pro Max ‘we already found larger lenses, in the ’13 Pro Max’ they have increased even more and therefore do not have case compatibility either.

So, if you are one of those who is about to receive one of the new iPhone or you want to get one soon, you should take all this into account, especially if you already come from a device of the last generation.
