The symbols at the top of a Samsung phone show network status, active features and notifications. A key-shaped symbol can mean a VPN connection, a phone symbol can relate to a call, and a Wi-Fi symbol shows the wireless connection. First, check where the symbol appears
Samsung system indicators and app notifications are different things. Swipe down from the top to open the notification panel. Some symbols only appear there, and a notification often names the app that sent it. A music player’s buttons are part of that app, so they are not all covered by a Galaxy status-bar chart.
Use Samsung’s official indicator-icon guide to compare the actual pictures. It notes that icons vary by phone, software and network operator; an old screenshot may not match your phone.

What is the dot on a newer Galaxy phone?
Samsung’s guide includes a pending-notification dot for One UI 7. Open the notification panel to check the waiting notification. Do not assume every small dot or unfamiliar app logo is the same system indicator.
Identify a symbol you do not recognise
- Open the notification panel and read the full message.
- Note whether the symbol disappears after you open that notification or turn off the matching feature.
- Compare it with the chart for your phone’s software version.
- If it belongs to an app, check that app’s help or settings.
- If asking support, include the phone model, One UI version and a cropped screenshot that shows the symbol.
A symbol on the back of the phone, packaging or an About screen is not necessarily a status-bar icon. Tell support where you saw it rather than trying to match it to an unrelated notification picture.
Can you hide the icons?
Search Settings for notification icons, status bar or battery percentage. The available controls depend on One UI, and changing notification display does not necessarily hide system indicators. Avoid turning off an app’s notifications just to remove a symbol if you still need its alerts.
