Thanks to the miniaturization of hardware and the ingenuity of people, truly amazing things are achieved. Pentaform, a London company, plans to start selling a biodegradable keyboard that can run Windows 10 soon. This keyboard, marketed under the AbacusBasic brand, is designed so that everyone can access the Internet.

This computer has many similarities with the Raspberry Pi 400 , a keyboard that houses a modified Raspberry Pi 4 inside. And it is that since the arrival of the raspberry plates, we have seen how many similar solutions have appeared. All designed to offer all users an economical and powerful solution for their day to day.

Pentaform points out that Abacus aims to be the most affordable computer in the world. Physically, what we see is a conventional office keyboard with a touchpad on one side. It looks quite similar to many Bluetooth keyboards on the market. The interesting thing is below the surface, since it hides a 4-core Intel processor.

Joon Sang Lee, co-founder of Pentaform highlights about Abacus that “it considers the planet as one of its main beneficiaries”. The reason for this is that the casing is made of a material that is biodegradable. In addition, it is highlighted that the interior components of the keyboard are designed to be repairable and recyclable.

The developers of this system embedded in a keyboard point out that the consumption is 31 kWh per year , practically the same as a light bulb. This is possible thanks to the fact that it uses the Intel Atom x5-Z8350 processor, a 4-core processor launched in 2016 and that has a TDP of only 2 W. This processor works at a frequency of 1.44 GHz and in Boost mode it can reach the 1.84GHz.

One might think that this processor is not much compared to any Intel Core i3. The reality is that it is a very good processor that for simple office automation, studying or multimedia is more than enough.

This system will be accompanied by 2 GB, 4 GB and 8 GB LPDDR3 RAM memory configurations with a frequency of 1866 MHz and in a Dual Channel configuration. On storage, you have an eMMC memory option between 16 GB and 128 GB . It also has a microSD card reader that supports memories of up to 512 GB.

A very complete system for day to day

It is not a device from which we can demand many things, it is a solution that brings computing closer to all users. It is no longer necessary to have a cumbersome computer tower in which we have invested a lot of money. For very little we have everything we need.

This system has WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity, which is great. In addition, it offers us an HDMI 2.0 video output that supports 4K @ 30 FPS. Regarding the rest of connectivity, it has a USB 3.0 OTG X1, two USB 2.0, a Gigabit Ethernet port and a USB -C port.

To be an economic system that starts at 150 dollars, the truth is that this system is not bad at all. It is logical that the more RAM and more storage we want, the more expensive this equipment will be. The most interesting parts is that it is easily repairable and the casing is biodegradable.
